First off, we love you all. The friends we have made as a traveling musical duo are now part of the fabric of our history. Everyone we met along the way will be in a scene in our eventual bio pic if I have anything to say about it. We have a few final shows on our schedule and then the band is going to vanish like Bilbo at his birthday party. Life has been an adventure for us, but it’s time for us to focus on our next chapter and that, unfortunately, has a different plot line. So we hope you will come out for a last hoorah or two. Our final shows will be in Seattle, Bremerton, Portland, and Astoria. Thank you, thank you, thank you for every bit of support you’ve given us. There are too many people and memories to recount here. But if you are reading this we probably know you - by face if not by name. (Sorry I’m so bad with names!) It has been a good run and a pleasure seeing you out there. To every person who has come out to a show... to every band that has shared a stage with us... to every friend or stranger that has invited us to crash at their place... to everyone who has ever bought merch or supported our Kickstarter... to the sound and recording engineers... to the bookers and promoters... to everyone who offered a kind word of support for our efforts... To all my friends!! Thank you, we love you, and fare well

Back in June we had the opportunity to perform at the Rimbert Illustration art gallery in Bremerton, WA. Eclectic paintings and moody lighting gave us a beautiful backdrop as we played to an attentive and energetic crowd. Jack Parker (Homegrown Recording Co.) recorded our set live, mixed and mastered it for us, and gave us something we can be proud to offer you. "Live and Acoustic" is 10 songs played on our brother Michael's Gibson acoustic guitar. Merry plays light sticks and brushes through out, but there's plenty of energy in the set. During the show, 9 year old Sydney Berko (daughter of gallery owner Danielle Rimbert) illustrated the portrait we are using for the album cover. She's really something special :)

This is a Bandcamp and CD release only. These tracks will not be on streaming services. As always the CD cover will be screen printed and hand folded by yours truly, and will feature young Sydney Berko's excellent artwork. Pick it up from our website or at our shows, CDs will ship after 11/1.

If you are in California, come on out and see us at one of our 5 upcoming shows! After that, we will be on show hiatus for a bit while we get another fresh recording ready for you.

Portland folks! See you Saturday 10/22 at Alberta Street Pub. 4-7p! Happy Hour show. We will have our live album recording engineer, Jack Parker opening the show, followed by Portland's own Radio Receiver.

Autumn is upon us. Time for a seasonal update from your friendly neighborhood rock n roll duo, The Mutineers. We had a brilliant summer and hope you did too. Very memorable up until the end, when we unfortunately had to cancel our Starday Tavern gig due Covid. Thankfully, Brian only had mild symptoms (taste and smell went haywire!) and Merry never tested positive at all. We were bummed to cancel our performance, but we do have another Portland show coming up on October 22nd at Alberta Street Pub. Come out for early entertainment from 4-7p! We will have Jack Parker in town from Bremerton opening the show. He's got a great new album that just released. And then our local buds Radio Receiver, featuring Nate Wallace on vocals, will take the reins and make our hearts break. We are on at 6p and done by 7. So don't be late. BTW if you missed the summer shows, then you missed my famous green shorts. Here they are in their glory at Pengilly's in Boise, shot by the talented Peter Dervin. Now back into storage you go for the rainy season tiny shorts!

Before the Alberta Street Pub show we will make a couple short runs out of town. Friday, September 30th we return to Erebus in Kelso with a rocking lineup. Former Denver-based, but now Tacoma residents, Serpentfoot will be teaming up with us and our partners in crime The Deadhollows for a loud and fun night. We saw Serpentfoot at Treefort in 2018 and again this past year, '22. We had so much fun at both shows and were stoked to find out they had transplanted to the PNW. Check out their weird, culty vibes on Bandcamp. We continue our journey north with The Deadhollows the next night to perform with Low Wires at McCoy's in Olympia, WA. Rock n roll lineup, rock n roll bar.

Looking forward to our return to the Labor Bar in Astoria, OR on Saturday, October 8th. The Labor Temple was our last show before the shut downs of 2020. Time to complete the circle.

The dates and venues are set for our California run in November. We always enjoy our annual west coast trip. Very pleased to be joined by RJ Bloke in SB, Dave, Brian & the 40HWW in Atascadero, and Patrolled by Radar and The Hollow Legs in Silverlake. You will hear some new tunes if you come out. It's a sneak preview of what we will record in the near future. Good times abound. Sacramento, Atascadero, Santa Barbara, LA, and Santa Cruz! Let's get together.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/70293522022-08-02T14:50:45-07:002022-08-02T14:50:46-07:00Concerts and Campouts and Cali Shows
The summer rolls on! We would love it if you joined us for a concert and campout this August. We have two options for you. First up, this Saturday, August 6 at Roshambo Artfarm in Sheridan, OR, pitch your tent and settle in for two sets as the sun heads over the coast range. We will be followed by the surf-rock goodness of King Ghidora taking us into the night hours. Beer, wine and cider will be available (sorry no outside booze at the show) and there will be a food truck as well. 7-10p Only $8. Advance tickets available HERE

Second concert and campout option for you is the 10th annual Hot August Nights Music Fest at the Dundee Lodge in Gaston, OR. It's a two day campout and music extravaganza from August 26-28 and it's only $20! It's a community event that is not for profit, just for good times with the folks from our wider PNW scene. Food and drink vendors on site, sorry no dogs allowed. Follow the FB event HERE

We return to Idaho this Labor Day Weekend for three shows. Stoked to start it all off on Friday 9/2 with Dirt Cheap and The Hackles at Pengilly's in Boise before heading to Stanley, Idaho to groove into 3 sets at Mountain Village Resort on Saturday. Book a room and hang out with us in the mountains! The Idaho tour finishes up on Sunday 9/4 at The Hermit Music Fest in Kuna. We will be on in the afternoon/early evening. But you can be there for two full days of great music. Check out the website and purchase advance tickets. HERMIT MUSIC FEST

Keep an eye out for our next update featuring a November tour through California. I'm hammering out the final details, but I can say that we will be in Sacramento, Atascadero, Santa Barbara, LA, and Santa Cruz :) We are pretty hyped on this one.

Take it slow out there. You'll miss the summer when it's gone. Let's go camping
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/69786642022-05-24T10:18:50-07:002022-05-24T10:18:50-07:00Summer Shows To Plan Your Life Around
We did it. We had a real proper Spring day here in the PNW. Warm and sunny with flowers blooming everywhere against the impossibly blue sky. We are hoping we get a beautiful June because we have a couple outdoor shows on the books. Big shout out to Boise. We are back with you this July! We were so excited to see pictures from one of our Treefort performances posted by No Depression. Thanks to photographer and all around good dude, Peter Dervin. Here's one he sent us.

Get out your calendars, it's time for your seasonal show update from The Mutineers.

We haven't played Starday Tavern since 2016 I believe. This time we bring our Washington buds, The Deadhollows down for the show along with Portland based Never Better. It's gonna be a loud rocking show and we are opening up at 8p.

If the weather is good on 6/5 we will be playing on the outdoor stage at Grateful Vineyard. The view is outrageous, and the food and wine are excellent. Bring your lawn chairs. Take Monday off and follow us to White Salmon for our acoustic set across the river.

The same goes for 6/8 in Kalama. If it's suitable outside we will be rocking out in the amphitheater next to the hotel. If not we will be back in the cozy lounge doing our acoustic show.

Making our first appearances in Centralia and Snohomish in June before returning to Bremerton for a live recording at Rimbert Illustrations.

We are looking forward to getting back on stage at Silver Moon Brewing in Bend. That place had a lot of energy back in April on our first trip. We get up and head all the way to Boise after that to play at The Vista Bar with Spike Coggins. We had to immediately book more Boise shows when we got home from Treefort. This show is going to rock.

As always, you can support the band while getting cool stuff from our store. Most of our items were hand screen printed by Brian and designed by Merry.

Have a great summer everyone! We hope to see you out there.

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/69458992022-04-11T12:16:08-07:002022-04-11T12:16:08-07:00Mountains-River-Ocean Tour and Treefort Review
Mountains-River-Ocean Tour. I admit it's not really a "tour" since we are just heading out from home on the weekends. But I can't help but think of the interesting geography of our next batch of shows. We start out on the south bank of The Columbia River at The Bargeway Pub in one of the windiest places I have ever been, The Dalles, Oregon. The pub is right on the river's edge. We will be performing our acoustic sets on our first visit to The Bargeway. The next day, we head off into the mountains, the land of the Nez Perce, the American Alps, the Wallowa Mountains, to perform at the Range Rider in Enterprise. Judging by the snow we got overnight here in Portland, we are betting there will still be some wintery weather out there. Come in to the saloon for a couple of cozy sets.

At the end of the month, we will head to Coos Bay on southern Oregon coast. April 30th, we will return to Front Street Provisioners for a two set performance on a Saturday night. Can't wait to drive down the Umpqua River Valley to good old Coos Bay for this visit to the Ocean. The brick oven pizza at Front Street is fantastic by the way.

May will bring a redux of our December run from Cathlamet, WA, to Astoria to Seaside, OR. We will be at RM38 Brewing on Friday, May 13 in the Cathlamet marina, staring out at the Lower Columbia River, and enjoying the company of our old community. Then on to Astoria at the mouth of the Pacific for a night at the perfectly named Merry Time Bar. It will be Merry Time in Astoria on two levels at least. And finally we will end the weekend on Sunday in lovely Seaside with a couple sets at Seaside Brewing Co.

So there it is: some time in the mountains, a bunch on the river, and a couple shows on the sea shore. Mountains-River-Ocean Tour. 6 chances to see us in the PNW in April and May, all of them are great destination spots for a getaway. And, thanks to our venue partners, all of these shows are free to enter (Your tips are greatly appreciated :) We will be back up in Northern Washington and in the Portland area in June.

P.S. Quick Treefort Recap:

It was the most fun we have had in years. No exaggeration. We saw all these bands - Dante Elephante, Brad Parsons, Voidstrider, Built To Spill, The Oh Cees (or however the hell they spell it these days), Rachel's Children, Serpentfoot, David Henry, The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band, Ryder and Rolling Thunder, and a whole bunch more. It was epic. We managed to play 4 times over the festival and finished off with a bang on Sunday night at Pengilly's. Here's a couple pics from that show courtesy of Rachael Baker aka @babe_raham_lincoln

We will return to Boise on July 23 at The Vista Bar. See you then!

Back around 2010 or so we were playing a lot of local gigs in Santa Barbara, CA. Our good friend Bill Lewis owned Muddy Waters Cafe and was hosting great indie music on a regular basis. We were fortunate to be called on to support touring bands when they came through town. One of those shows was with Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. The Rev was in his second or third year of the road grind. Playing 200+ gigs a year out of a conversion van with his wife Breezy and his cousin Cuz. They were a force of nature and completely floored us with their energy, showmanship, and authenticity. I watched everything they did from soundcheck to show finale with intent because I realized very quickly that they were doing something next level, something special. We had the opportunity to kick back and talk shop after the show and that little chat, with all its hard fought wisdom, remains with me to this day. We've had the chance to reunite a couple more times since then and its always a really pleasure. So we are very excited that our return to Treefort Music Fest in Boise, ID will be in support of The Rev. You should definitely come to the fest and join us on the last night for a real banger of a show.

One more February gig left. We return to Erebus in Kelso on 2/26 to rock out with The Generals and The Deadhollows. This one is gonna be a high energy show. Let's get wild people.

Before we head to Boise for the Fest we will play in Vancouver at our favorite micro brewery in town, Trap Door, on 3/18. And we will follow that with an acoustic show in the intimate setting of Strum Guitars in SE Portland on 3/19. Over the past couple years in relative seclusion we have developed our lounge act so that we can showcase our mellower and more introspective songwriting in venues where the rock show just wouldn't fit. Keep an eye on the show info so you know when its an acoustic or electric show. We like to call it The Mellowneers when we are doing the lounge act :)

April will see us returning to Bend, OR with our first appearance at Silver Moon Brewing, followed by a trip down the Gorge with stops in The Dalles and Enterprise. It's shaping up to be a lovely Spring. Our first run of 2022 was a blast. 6 shows in 8 days. We felt a different kind of energy out there, a buzz of excitement. It's been a rough couple years of semi or complete isolation for so many people. And very little live music. We are so pleased to be out there with you again.

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/68728782022-01-18T11:33:33-08:002022-01-18T11:33:33-08:00February Shows in the PNW
2021 recap!

16 shows. That's 4x the amount we played in 2020 so that is a good sign I guess. As we muddle our way through January (currently hibernating), we are hopeful that the situation improves as we head into February. We have an excellent lineup of performances in Oregon and Washington. We are doing a few dinner shows which will be acoustic sets. And the rest are rockers. We are finally returning to Bremerton (which was one of the first places we had to cancel back in 2020.) Our pal Jack Parker will be joining us with his backing band The Remedy for the show in Bremerton and at The Spanish Ballroom in Tacoma. And we finish this batch of shows with our buddy band The Deadhollows and one of my favorite bands in Portland right now, The Generals. The three of us will take over Erebus in Kelso on 2/26. As we have noted previously, Erebus fucking rocks so please get your ass into that venue for this gig.

Check out our unplugged version of Drunken Prayer's iconic song, "What Made Me Kill". We ask the question, "What if this murder ballad was sung by a woman instead of a man?"

New songs are starting to poke their heads out like proverbial groundhogs. We are demoing up as we go, hopeful we can get back into the studio this year and make a new record. It would be nice to purge the sentiments and emotions that are behind these songs, driven as they were by the events of the last two years. What lies on the other side of this? It would be nice to get a glimpse, to let go of the current refrain, but the present has to be dealt with first. Come out to a show and you will hear at least one or two of these songs which have been simmering for months. In the meantime, take care of each other and yourselves.

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/67314012021-08-30T15:51:02-07:002021-08-30T15:51:02-07:00September and October events.
The situation is very tenuous for musicians and the venues we partner with. To keep our tour going and the venues open, please help us keep our events safe and responsible for the community. Get vaccinated and wear masks in close environments.

We have another half dozen shows up on our schedule, including 4 in California. It has been really great to be back on the stage again. Finally being able to perform the songs we released just before the 2020 shutdown has been cathartic. Thank you to everyone who has booked us this year. And thank you especially to the folks in the crowd.

Up ahead we have our return to Enterprise, Oregon, the homeland of the Nez Perce Tribe and burial place of Chief Joseph's father. One of the most beautiful places we've been to, and we've been around this country a lot. Then we head south to our old Central and South Coast stomping grounds. We will be back in Atascadero at Raconteur Room, down in Culver City at The Cinema Bar, and making our first stop at Tom Bergin's in Los Angeles for the Bigtop Bandstand. Both of our LA area shows will be with the great, Patrolled By Radar. On our way back to Oregon, we will be returning to Whiskey Richards in Santa Barbara, the stage for about a dozen Mutineers shows back in the early years. That bill will feature Rival Cults, with guitarist and songwriter Adi Tejada. Adi and I (Brian) played together in a band called The Depths. We made some great memories in that band. And finally, we return to Portland in time for our first ever appearance at Hawthorne Hideaway in SE. We will share the bill with Joseph Hunter Duncan and locals, Bitches in the Beehive. Check our calendar for the details.

I think these may be our last shows of 2021. As outdoor stages close in the Northwest and the harsh weather sets in, we also see our public health system stretched to the limit. Until our system makes a rebound, we will be halting all other booking. So come on out to see us while you can. And once again, please, take the best possible measures against contracting and spreading covid. There is so much at risk right now, from jobs to lives to our individual and collective mental health. Stay safe everyone!
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/66825032021-07-08T11:08:50-07:002021-07-09T11:31:22-07:00Summer shows in the Northwest

We are back in action this summer. Check our schedule here. If you are in Washington and Oregon this July and August, come out and see us. We are breaking the ice at some of the first places to support us when we moved here back in 2016. Just so happens that the first three are all breweries. We are very pleased to once again be part of Wahkiakum County's Bald Eagle Day celebration. All of these shows will feature multiple sets, and help us stretch out after a long time without performing. Vancouver at Trap Door Brewing, Cathlamet at River Mile 38 Brewing, and Seaside Brewing in... Seaside. We will see you very soon.

The first proper show we played in Portland after we moved in 2016 was at Old Gilbert Road Tavern with our friends Hearts of Oak and Drunken Prayer. Last year we moved into an apartment just down the road from OGRT, which is cool. We will be performing there with Meredith Brothers on July 31. This our first Portland gig since February 2020 when we performed at Turn Turn Turn in NE just weeks before the country shut down. Special invitation to our local SE neighbors to come out to the show and help us make a home for live music in the Flats.

August will see us venture up the Gorge. We make our first appearance in White Salmon, WA at Everybody's Brewing. They host Monday evening music. I love that. Two weeks after that, we will be back in The Dalles playing at Route 30 for our first time. In between those two gigs, we will make our return to Erebus in Kelso, WA. We had a great time there with a couple of punk bands back in Feb 2020. Here at The Mutineers, we love to mix with all of the genres that inspire us. Sometimes that's folk, sometimes country, sometimes indie rockers or punk. We love it all and know our fans love all kinds of music too. Looks like this time we will be joined by a Motorhead tribute band. We are down.

Still some time to add a show or two this summer if they come up. We will perform at a private party in Seattle on September 5. But we are on the hunt for other dates in Northern Washington. For our California friends, we will see you in late September. Dates are starting to be released so keep your eyes out.

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/66286162021-05-12T11:32:20-07:002021-05-12T11:32:20-07:00Return of the Music
I sent my first batch of booking emails out this week. I haven't done that in about 15 months. After seeing some great news concerning vaccinations and some clear guidelines from the government, the emails just kinda spewed out of me before I knew what was happening. Merry and I get our second dose soon and encourage you to get vaccinated too. It's the only way for us to bring live music back.

Our show has grown. We released a new EP just before the lockdown with songs we had only just begun to play live. And while we've been without shows, I've been writing a new full length album. Merry has used the down time to get her bass playing skills up. We will be performing some songs or entire shows with guitar and bass, and others with Merry behind the drums. Keeping it fresh for you and making sure we are always growing as musicians. We made new 12" vinyl, t-shirts, posters and koozies right before shut down as well. Can't wait to finally show them to folks :)

Look for us in the Pacific Northwest this year. No big tours in the works. This is a good opportunity for us to reset and start from square one again, reintroducing ourselves to our home community. We can't wait to see you again. Show announcements coming soon. Book us for your event or venue at mutineersmusic [at] gmail.com
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/65439792021-02-08T00:00:00-08:002021-02-09T12:33:00-08:0010-Year Annniversary video for "A Summer's Minotaur"
Our 2011 album "From The Dirge To The Dance" turns 10 years old this year, so we dug back into the archives and put together this video for our instrumental song "A Summer's Minotaur" with some photos and tour footage from that era. We were a four-piece band back then, touring all around California with fun trips to Idaho for Ranchfest, stops in San Francisco, Portland, and who could forget the time we played at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas? Hope you enjoy this little trip back in time...

It's almost Thanksgiving and you know what that means. Actually, no... no we don't know what it means. Certainly not the same thing it has meant in previous years. Most of the country is back into some kind of March-like lock down and hospitals are full or filling up. It's disappointing and sad to think of what our health care professionals are going through. We try to focus on what we have control over in our lives, and move forward the best we can. It is not a good time to be a professional musician, but not all is bleak. We continue to create art and music, and hope for the best.

After wading through the strange purgatory of the first half of 2020, Merry and I have settled back in Portland. We managed to perform live twice this summer at restaurants that followed health guidance. Our screen printing shop is set up once more. Now with the dark weather upon us, that little window we had to get out there responsibly is gone. To make up for the lost stage time, I've started to live stream a solo acoustic performance about once a month since August. I was honestly far more nervous before my first live stream than any show I've played in years. Because I didn't know what technical or acoustical problems I would have, because I was terrified that absolutely no one would watch or participate in the chat, and because I have never played a full set completely solo, I ended up completely sweating through my "show shirt" by the second song of that first live stream. But I made it through and as the show went on, got more and more comfortable.

I've been playing a few Mutineers songs in each live stream, but the set list has been 90% covers. Some are songs I picked and some are songs I solicited from you all via FB. My most recent set was covers of songs written by our band buddies, all independent artists we've been playing with for years. You can watch the full performance on our Youtube page . There's a list of the artists I covered in the description of the video. You can also check out this Spotify Playlist I made with all of the original versions of the songs in the order they were played on the show. The other live streams are still available on FB and can be found on our timeline.

I'm definitely sold on the value and experience of the live stream. The reality is, for many folks, getting out to the bar or club to come see the Mutineers live is challenging to say the least. "The bar" is not a place where everyone feels comfortable, and the typical show time hours are not for the faint of heart. Don't get me wrong, I actually love the classic bar environment, but I also get why many do not. But even if you love the bar too, lots of people who might want to go don't because they are either: not in the town we are playing, parents who can't ditch their kids for a rock show at 11pm., typically asleep by the time we play because they get up at 5:30 for their jobs, or they have a billion other obligations that have to take precedence.

Live streams are not comparable to a live show. The sound will never be as good or as big. We still can't figure out how to involve the drums because we live in an apartment. The lighting, the stage, the anticipation, none of it is as effective over digital media. It's not the same, but it doesn't have to be. I have found it to be the most intimate performance experience I've been involved with. I can choose to read and engage in audiences reactions in real time. The feedback is more personal and more frequent than the somewhat embarrassing and rushed experience of saying "good job" to us as we hurry to get our equipment off stage at 12:30am. The audience can choose when to start and stop the performance. They can tune in from around the world, and I'm happy to report that we had viewers from as far away as the UK and Southeast Asia. I've even been sent pictures of folks watching on their huge smart TVs with surround sound. We picked up almost 600 views of the video AFTER it was live. It takes a long time to prepare for these live streams because each show is entirely different material. It is really powerful to know that the performance continues to have legs after the live stream ends. Thank you for the support. I am humbled.

Tune in on Wednesday 12/23 as I live stream Christmas-Eve Eve. I'll be sitting at the synthesizer, performing some classic tunes that would normally be a part of our annual Holiday Spectacular. The tradition will continue albeit in Covid lockdown fashion. Don't forget to visit our store. Give the gift of The Mutineers for this holiday season. FREE SHIPPING!

At long last our record has arrived! Our double EP featuring No Winter and Threshold on 12" black vinyl is now in stock in our online store and available to order now. To all you Kickstarter backers, thank you so much for your patience, everyone should have their record by the first week of August. Last night, we sat back and shared a toast as we listened to our first album on vinyl. Merry and I are in Portland now, staying with friends while we look for a more permanent place to call home. A lot of things have changed for us as we adapt to this new reality of limited gatherings and social distancing. But when you listen to this record, we want you to imagine us playing to a packed house. Then, pretend we can all give each other sweaty hugs after the show. Finally, picture us loading up and heading out to our next gig, driving in the van on the open road, flying that ship straight into the sun...

Hope to see you all again soon!

This song was deeply enhanced by the exquisite pedal steel playing of Raymond Richards. He also joined me at the end for the fun electric guitar duet. Thanks Raymond!

Getting out on a national tour has been a lifelong goal of mine. Merry got the bug too as soon as we went on our first two-weekend tour on the west coast. For over 3 years we’ve been circling the country playing mostly small venues, dive bars, breweries and restaurants. It has been an incredible ride and brought us so many new friends as well as the ability to continue life-long friendships with actual in-person visits on a regular basis. We’ve had the opportunity to grow as musicians and performers by playing more often than I ever thought possible. But there are nights out there that truly test us. In the midst of the difficulties of being an obscure independent rock duo, living out of a van, I’ve had to reflect on what truly matters. I don’t know where this ship is headed, but I’m very fortunate to take the ride with Merry, a talented, hard-working, and beautiful person. It doesn’t always come up roses out there, but we are still a couple of the lucky ones. Here’s my ode to Merry Young and our life, come what may.

The full EP is now up and available to purchase as a whole. Thank you for stopping by and listening to our new songs. Please check out our merch store. We would love to get you a new shirt, a handmade CD, or a screen printed poster. As always, they are designed by Merry and printed by Brian. Hope to see you out there from the stage sometime soon!

This one is a shoutout to those amazing people in our lives who barrel through the bad times and the good with incredible verve. Equal parts creation and destruction, these archetypes are the ones who can laugh louder, party harder and later, and seem to shrug off the stuff in life that can level the average mortal. They can elevate us and take us to places we would never go on our own, but they can also take us down with them in a fiery wreck. It’s the danger in them that makes them so intriguing. They are attractive in the truly magnetic sense, get close enough and you will be swept up in their energy. There is a scary side to it. After all, what goes up must come down (at least on this planet). Who knows if it’s good or bad? I’m happy to have had the experience either way.

Enjoy the rock n roll. Back to the basics with guitar, bass, drums, and two vocals.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/62762422020-04-08T11:21:57-07:002020-04-08T11:21:57-07:00You Can't Run Away
Stream Track #3 - You Can’t Run Away

You’ve doubtless heard it said many times before, during some frustrated conversation about the troubled state of society. If we could only start over, with just the good people, our people, we could get everything right. I’ve heard this sentiment from family and friends as both a melancholic and unrealistic wish as we temporarily escape our troubles, or as a serious plan of action where we plot out how to buy land and start a new community. I think these moments provide some necessary relief and camaraderie when the news is getting us down. But underneath it all, my pessimistic side is nagging at me. All of the troubles we see in the world are universal to us all. Greed, gluttony, lust, rage, and the rest of the “deadly sins” live inside all of us. They aren’t someone else’s problem, they are our collective inescapable challenge.

This folk song features a Nashville-tuned guitar played by yours truly, and the addition, once again, of Raymond Richards’ mellotron and bass playing. If you’ve been following along with all of our releases, you will have already noticed Merry’s beautiful vocals providing harmony in key spots. Her voice on the choruses of this song make me really happy. When it’s all said and done, I hope you will see this song as a hopeful tune, rather than a pessimistic anthem. I think facing our challenges makes our celebrations so much more richer and meaningful.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/62744792020-04-07T09:22:26-07:002020-04-07T09:22:26-07:00The Great Columbia
Stream Track #2 - The Great Columbia

We’ve spent a lot of time around the Columbia River these past few years. It’s an ancient river, having been carved out by multiple massive volcanic eruptions over 10’s of thousands of years. It has stories to tell. It was the life blood of Indigenous people for perhaps 10,000 years. It led Lewis and Clark to the ocean and the end of their epic journey, which in turn became the seed for European settlement. There have been industries and villages which have come and gone. This history is painted all around the Lower Columbia River, as well as up into the hidden valleys where its tributaries flow. Cellist Andrew Emlen lives up in one of those sparsely populated, soggy, and beautiful valleys. It was an honor to have him perform on this track, our ode to one of the world’s great rivers. Producer, Raymond Richards, added some key elements with his mellotron, including accordion and mandolin. We hope this folk song will give you some wistful moments. In these dark times, it is hard to imagine that the river continues on to the sea and that all things will pass. If you have children to put to sleep tonight, or if you have trouble finding rest yourself, you can sing the classic existentialist tune that gave inspiration to this song:

Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/62733802020-04-06T10:49:20-07:002020-04-06T10:49:20-07:00No Winter EP release week
All this week we are releasing a single a day from our new EP, No Winter. Each day we will post a new song and make it available to stream from right here on our website with the full EP available for purchase this Friday. You can also order the CD now from our merch store and we will send it out after the Friday release. Be sure to check out our latest shirts and posters while you are at it. We stocked up big time for an extensive tour before we all ended up in lock down. We would love to get some of this merch into your hands instead of keeping it in our closet. And now, let's get down to the business at hand...

Stream Track #1 - No Winter

The title track of our new EP, No Winter features the intense and dramatic cello playing of Andrew Emlen, an accomplished musician and songwriter based in Wahkiakum County, Washington. Our engineer/producer Raymond Richards joins the rhythm section and is on the bass throughout the EP, just as he was on 2018’s Threshold EP. We hope you enjoy this arrangement of The Mutineers, we love the way it kicks things off. Here’s a bit about what influenced the song:

No Winter is a dark, folk-rock, parable based on an ancient Taoist story. I first heard the tale while watching the indie documentary, The Bill Murray Stories. I think it had an impact on me because of a deep need to be more stoic about life’s ups and downs. My own emotional rollercoaster was making me a bit sick at the time. You can read the original tale first or wait until after you’ve listened to our song to see if it enhances the experience. Either way, it’s neither good, nor bad :)

There once was farmer who had a friendly neighbor. One day his horse runs away. And his neighbor comes over and says, to commiserate, “I’m so sorry about your horse.” And the farmer says “Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?” The neighbor is confused because this is clearly terrible. The horse is the most valuable thing he owns.

But the horse comes back the next day and he brings with him 12 feral horses. The neighbor comes back over to celebrate, “Congratulations on your great fortune!” And the farmer replies again: “Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?”

And the next day the farmer’s son is taming one of the wild horses and he’s thrown and breaks his leg. The neighbor comes back over, “I’m so sorry about your son.” The farmer repeats: “Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?”

Sure enough, the next day the army comes through their village and is conscripting able-bodied young men to go and fight in war, but the son is spared because of his broken leg.

And this story can go on and on like that. Good. Bad. Who knows?
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/62688512020-04-01T15:54:05-07:002020-04-01T15:54:05-07:00Covid Cancelations and EP Release
Well hello fellow quarantiners. We hope this post is finding you healthy and that the harsh realities of this pandemic have not come to your door to claim a loved one. I'm afraid the truth is that we will all be coming very near to Reaper this year, whether it's through our circle of family and friends or whether we come face to face with our own mortality. These are indeed difficult times and we wish you all the best of luck, if there is such a thing.

I apologize for not updating the website sooner. It's been kind of depressing to deal with some of this admin stuff. We of course have been forced to cancel our entire national tour. Although some folks seem to be holding out hope that venues will get moving again in May, I don't share their optimism. And at that point, we will not be able to cross the entire country to restart our tour in the middle of the dates. It's just not economically viable even if, by some miracle, life returns to normal by then. We are sad that we won't get to see so many of you. We had a great tour lined up that we spent months working on. All gone in a cloud of coronavirus. In the grand scheme of what's going on, compared to the real human suffering, this is a drop in the bucket. We recognize that so many have already lost much more. Still, there are many who are in a similar boat, major loss of income and no real prospect of that changing anytime soon. Let's all work on supporting each other as much as we can. Be kind, empathetic, and generous where your situation allows.

On a much happier note, we have continued to move forward with our new releases, No Winter EP and the No Winter/Theshold 12" Vinyl. The songs have been mastered for both CD and vinyl and sent off to the manufacturers. The CDs are actually already made and in transit to us and will be ready to send out to our Kickstarter backers as early as this Friday or Saturday. In addition, every backer of our campaign, at any donation amount, will receive an email this Friday with a link to download all of the new tracks. We are excited to finally get this into the ears of our fans. Thank you all again from the bottom of our hearts. There is, unfortunately, a delay to report on the vinyl. We have just been informed that the manufacturer has shut down to comply with state mandated business closures. We respect the need to protect the health of all workers. We will keep you all informed as we find out what we can expect in terms of vinyl production. If this becomes an open ended problem with no solution in sight, we will consult with our backers who ordered the vinyl to see if we can offer alternative products or refund part or all of their pledges. But if you can be patient with us, we will get our vinyl made as soon as possible. Thank you!

For those of you who did not jump on the Kickstarter bandwagon, we have good news as well. Next Monday, we will release the first track off the EP to stream and purchase on Bandcamp. The release will be accompanied by a short description of the song and the inspirations behind its creation. I will post them to our facebook page as well, so be sure to follow us there. We will continue to release a new song every Monday until all five tracks are out, at which time we will also make the CD available to ship anywhere in the US as well. The EP will not be available on streaming services until June at the earliest. You can help us get through this time in quarantine by spending a dollar for each song rather than the tiny fraction of a penny we receive through Spotify, Pandora, or Apple. We also have new items in our merch store, here on the website. The album art has been converted into a beautiful poster design by Merry and printed by Brian. We also put the No Winter art on a killer, heather navy blue t-shirt. We did a new run of our very popular but very limited "tree with ravens" design that sold out very quickly in 2018. And we have restocked all sizes of our red shirt with ravens. On top of that, we have KOOZIES! So please have a look at our stash. There's lots of cool things to pick from and we would love to get more people wearing our shirts and hanging up our posters. Seriously, our shirts are super comfy and great for long days sitting on your couch and social distancing the hell out of this damn virus. Every purchase means a lot to us. Without live shows, we are really in a tough spot. We will keep on rehearsing and hopefully come out of this with a whole bunch of new songs for the next album!

On a personal note, we've had a rough couple of months. While we will never know what virus brought it on, Merry and I got hit pretty hard with a bronchitis-like sickness that would not quit and eventually turned into a sinus infection. After an on-line consultation with a doctor, it looks like I've had pneumonia for a while. It was nasty at times but on other days it was just a general malaise that seemed like it would clear up with a good night sleep. Then it would come back again with force. Weirdest experience, as I've been fortunate to stay pretty healthy and made it through the last 25 years without ever needing prescription medication for anything. That mentality made me avoid going to urgent care or a doctor's office for longer than I should have. Merry came down with similar symptoms but not as severe as my worst days, but enough to make us both fairly miserable. In any case, the antibiotics seem to working and I'm finally getting near to 100%. Merry is almost in top form as well. Being ill as this pandemic has spread really increased our anxiety levels, especially since there was absolutely no way to get tested. I'm not sure I would have taken this virus as seriously as early on as I did had I not been sick as a dog. When you're healthy you feel invulnerable; it's hard to remember what being sick is truly like. Be considerate to your neighbors and stay safe in your home. And remember, there are so many out there who don't even have a home to hunker down in. Dark times can lead to solidarity if you keep your eyes and hearts open. We hope to see you soon!

We start our busy season this weekend up in northern Washington with four shows: Bremerton, Seattle, Olympia, and Yelm. Then it's off to Montana before heading south to warmer weather for the Spring. So many good dates and fun bands to play with, keep up with them by following us on the Bandsintown app.

Meanwhile, we've been working hard on our recording and Kickstarter rewards. We have sent our EP off to get mastered, so it won't be long before new music is available for download to our Kickstarter backers. As is typical, recording and mixing took a bit longer than we projected, so our CDs will not be mailed out before we leave for Montana. But we have several days off when we get to Arizona and we should be able to do a big mailing then. I have been printing shirts, hoodies, and posters while we are still out here on the Lower Columbia River. We will get those out to you before we leave. If you backed our campaign you should have also received an email last week with a "secret" url to get your two bonus tracks, featuring Terry Luna and Michael Astudillo. We really hope you will download them and enjoy! Drop us a line if you can't find the link.

By now you've probably been barraged by news of pandemics and stock market crashes. Rough news indeed. No one knows how this will all play out exactly. We hope that you will be healthy and come out to see us while we are on the road. We have new songs to share, and our shows have been so fun lately. We would love to sing for you and with any luck take your cares away for the night. If it's your time to vote, PLEASE do so. We don't have a perfect system by any means, but we hope that you will contribute. See you out on the road!
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/62293672020-02-26T21:06:55-08:002020-02-26T21:06:55-08:00We Did It! New Album On The Way
We reached our Kickstarter goal! Now we are busy getting the rewards together, screen printing T shirts, hoodies, CDs and posters. We plan to ship all of the rewards (except vinyl--that takes longer) before we leave for our next tour on March 11. Vinyl should be arriving in July. We finished recording and mixing last week so we are right on schedule with the new album, and we are really happy with how these new songs sound. We'll keep you posted and let you know when the downloads and CDs are available. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

It's finally happening, we are taking the plunge and creating our first ever release on vinyl. We've had a lot of requests for records over the years and we think now is the time for us to create something special for you vinyl lovers. We've been back in the studio with producer/multi-instrumentalist Raymond Richards, recording a new 5 song EP. Along with a CD release of the EP, we will also take the 5 new tracks and combine them with the five from Threshold EP to make a double EP split 12" record. These ten songs share a cohesive style and story, born out of our collaboration with Raymond, and influenced by our time on the Columbia River. We think we captured some special moments in the studio and we hope you'll buy our new record or CD!

PLEDGE TO OUR KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN HERE!

We've been a DIY band from the start and have always managed to fund our recordings by performing, selling merch, and a little hustling on the side. A record, however, costs more up front than we can handle on our own. By supporting our Kickstarter campaign, you'll get to pre-order our first 12" vinyl and secure your own copy of our limited run of this release. You'll be in possession of our new songs months before we release them to streaming services and the general public. And on top of that, you'll also be helping us with the cost of our production so we don't have to turn to a greedy bank for funds. Hear me out! If you back our campaign, you'll be the envy of your peers and an example to small children everywhere, which is no small thing.

As you might expect, the artwork in our pledge rewards will be designed by Merry and printed by Brian. We have shirts, and hoodies, and even a custom printed Levi's denim jacket for a limited few. You can choose from our back catalog of CDs and posters with some of our pledge packages as well. The vinyl will take months to produce and ship to you, unfortunately, but most of our other rewards will make it to as early as mid March. So head on over to Kickstarter, check out our rewards and make a pledge.

We have a big budget to crack, not gonna lie. It will cost us over $2200 just to reproduce the vinyl, let alone the cost of recording, mixing, and mastering. When we include the cost of making and shipping our rewards, and the fees from Kickstarter, we end up with a grand total of $5,300. That's a big investment for our DIY duo but we can do this together.

The truth is we will need as many folks on board as possible. We only have until February 24 to reach our goal or the campaign fails. That's right, if we don't get $5300 in pledges, no customers are charged, no rewards are sent, and we get nothing for the effort. But that's ok, the limited timeline is what makes these campaigns work so effectively. Nothing like a deadline to spur people into action.

Can you help us spread the word? Sharing the link to our campaign would mean the world to us. Remember this isn't a request for charity, we have some great rewards for you and your friends. It's been an amazing experience to travel the country playing music and meeting cool people. We've appreciated so much the kind words of encouragement you've given us along the way. We really can not do this without you. You are the other member of the band!

Thanks in advance for your support! Keep your eye on our calendar! Pacific Northwest dates are up for February. More coming for the region in March before we head out on another extended US tour. Good things. Lots to do! Let's go.

Merry and I are getting ready for a few last shows to round out 2019. For the first time since we started the tradition in 2011, we will have two performances of The Holiday Spectacular in one season: one in Portland at Teutonic Wine Company and the other at River Mile 38 in Cathlamet, WA. Our friends, Ian Brandon and Andrew Emlen will join us on fiddle and cello. It's a great ensemble, and I hope you can catch a show!

We will be there on Wednesday night, December 18. If you've been following us for a while, you know Matt has been a long time collaborator. He's a great singer/songwriter with deep knowledge of the roots of American music that he uses to weave a thread through his shows. Great time of year to walk around NW and then hunker down in the basement club of a classic hotel.

We've made a home out here on the Lower Columbia River for the last three years when we are not on the road. Been wonderful getting to know the locals and working with River Mile 38. And so we will do our third Spectacular here in Cathlamet. We will be joined by a cast of local musicians who will take the mic and sing with us. Saturday, December 21

At the time of posting, we don't have an NYE show on the schedule, but keep your eye out for us. We may have a show for you if you're up in the PNW. I'll keep you posted.

We will be in the studio this month as well, back to work with Raymond Richards. It's the season to stay in and work on new music and plan the 2020 tour route. We have a lot in the works already. But more on that after the holidays. We hope you are happy and healthy, and if you are not, that you have someone to lean on. Thanks for all your support this year! We are grateful. Cheers

It's nice to be back in the Pacific Northwest, with the steady drizzle, the colorful fallen leaves, and the cat next to the wood burning stove. We spent the last two weeks of the tour in California, where summer refuses to cede any ground. It was 9 weeks ago that we left our little island community and began the Echolocation tour. What a ride! And it's not quite over yet. Before we get to the tour highlights, here are the last three dates on the schedule:

11/21 at Parliament Tavern, West Seattle, with Michael Ray and the Plastic Sheets and Nosretep

11/22 at The Manette Saloon, Bremerton, with Jack Parker & the Remedy, and Tony Winters

11/23 at Pig Bar, Olympia, with Waking Bear

With these three shows in Washington, the final tally for this tour will be at 40 shows in 19 states. We played with about 25 different bands. We played 11 shows by ourselves. We performed 3 times in Colorado and 3 times in Wisconsin, but California was way out in front with 10 shows. It was 90+ degrees during the day in Kansas and Arizona. It got down to 25 overnight outside of Albuquerque and there was snow on the ground in Amarillo.

We stayed at 4 hotels over the 8+ weeks we were away. The remaining nights were spent in rest areas, Walmart parking lots, camp grounds, and with family and friends when possible. The van needed new rotors and breaks while out on the road, and the check engine light is on. Merry's awesome faux leather jacket and Brian's Rev. Peyton t shirt were both retired on account of decomposition. Neither of us got sick on the road, although 2 hangovers were reported.

We played in a wide variety of locations. Small venues, dive bars, tap rooms and patios, breweries, house parties, a Vaudeville era theater, restaurants, a dance hall, a wedding venue, a bowling alley and a road house or two. We were as far north as Hancock, MI on Lake Superior, and as far South as Tucson, AZ. The tour went coast to coast as well. On the last day's journey back to Washington, we came within inches of hitting an enormous buck while driving in rush hour traffic at dusk. We felt very fortunate to have our health and our lives when we returned home.

The bands we played with were diverse, talented, and all around lovely folks. There was a ton of great music and performances. So we decided to make this playlist of the indie rockers, troubadours, and weirdos we were fortunate enough to share a stage with. Not everyone has their tunes up on Spotify, for better or worse, so we have some bands missing. We also added Patrolled By Radar to the list even though we didn't get to play with them, because, Jay, you know why ;) The playlist is roughly arranged in the order that we performed with them over the last two months.

It's tough to play favorites. We had a lot of great times, but there are a few stand out moments for us. Mickey's Tavern in Madison, WI, Maverick Saloon in Santa Ynez, CA, and The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz all had that epic feel, where folks are packed in and you don't need to encourage them to move up to the stage because they are already there, ready to party. Great bands on all these bills. And at the Maverick we had the opportunity to rock out the last three songs of the night with Terry Luna back on stand up bass. That was killer! The Orpheum Theater in Hancock, MI was magical in all its velvet dressing and vintage grandeur. It was excellent to reunite with our buddy Matt Sayles there. Nyack, NY was my hometown show. Playing with Rest Assured? was incredible. They were so tight! You could feel the energy in the crowd of old school fans. Spirits were high that night! Down in some deep holler outside of Asheville, we played at a wedding. Friends of our dear friend, Morgan Geer aka Drunken Prayer. Morgan played bass with us for about an hour or so. Picking up the songs as we played, while I shouted the chords. We have got to do that again, but with less chord shouting. And I doubt we will forget about Halloween weekend in Tucson with the lovely Miss Lana Rebel. She is a rare talent and also has some of the best stage banter. Che's Lounge was filled with fun people that night. And our first stops ever in Oklahoma were really positive. Let me stop here before I just list every show on the tour.

We had a blast. There seemed to be more folks at more of the shows, and your encouragement means the world to us. We are taking all that energy into the studio this winter. Hugs
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/58669282019-08-22T16:35:43-07:002019-08-22T16:35:43-07:00Walnut City Music Fest and the Echolocation Tour (Fall 2019)
Bats and moths have inspired us. We begin our fall US tour on a full moon, Friday the 13th of September. We can't believe our luck. It's the Echolocation Tour, in which we use our sound waves to find good food and new friends while safely dodging predators. Almost 40 dates in 20 states over 8 weeks. We have an intriguing new design from Merry that will become a t shirt and a screen printed poster. And of course, some new songs to introduce.

Before we hit the road, we will perform twice during the Walnut City Music Festival in McMinnville, OR. Find us on the main stage in Lower City Park on Friday at 6p and the downtown at The Oak for an afterparty set starting at 11p. Hitch a ride up the mountain the following morning and join us at Solera Brewery in Parkdale. The views of Mt. Hood are insane as it sits right behind the outdoor stage. And we will perform one last time in Cathlamet with our buddy Jon Bartel and Jack Parker at River Mile 38 on Saturday, 9/7.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/57948262019-06-17T15:06:16-07:002019-06-26T11:25:14-07:00The Mountaineer Tour
The most common mispronunciation of our name is, The Mountaineers, followed closely by, The Mutton Ears. For the record, it is pronounced Mew-tin-ears, as in MUTINY! But as the saying goes, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." So we have named our summer tour THE MOUNTAINEER TOUR. It all starts July 12 in La Grande at Side A Brewing. We will have a few gigs in the area before we hit the road for two and a half weeks in the mountains. For all you flatlanders out there in the rest of the U.S. keep an eye out for our fall national tour announcement, coming around August 1. We will be making the rounds in September, October, and November.

This weekend we head back to Skyline Tavern on Thursday 6/20. Situated up on the hill above Forest Park in Portland, OR, this is an intimate environment for our show, plus the building, grounds, and view are outstanding. Next, we head to Bend for our first proper gig in 8 years. We will be joining Cosmonautical for a house party at Loco Continuum. Contact us for details if you are in the area. We end the weekend on Saturday in The Dalles for our first performance at Rivertap. Looking forward to this short run!

Portland area, don't forget to get your tickets to the 39th Annual Crawfish Boil on Thursday, July 4. They are going fast because it's an amazing deal. $30 gets you all day hourly crawfish and shrimp boil, a food ticket to go through the buffet line, 5 drink tickets, and performances by 11 awesome bands from noon till 10pm! People were turned away at the door last year, so don't sleep on it if you want to attend. We play at 3p. Details at: https://www.facebook.com/events/845779985775596/. You can follow us up to Cathlamet, WA on Saturday if you got the energy. We will be playing at River Mile 38 Brewery for the first time in a long time. It's worth it to visit this area!

And then we hit the road for real. We are very excited for this loop through mountain country. I think we will be crossing the Great Divide four times on this trip. It will take us through eastern Oregon, western Idaho, a loop around western Montana, to Spokane, WA for the first time, and then back to Olympia and Chehalis where we made our first visits in May. 12 shows in 15 days! Personally, I am most excited about returning to Boise. We have always wanted to play at The Olympic Venue and it turns out we get the chance to do it on a fantastic bill. MESSIMER, Rider and Rolling Thunder, and The Mutineers. We had some lovely weather to travel and tour our region in the past month. We just returned to the farm. It's back to cool and rainy. I'm not unhappy with it. I love the rain. Sooner or later, real Summer will show up and we have some fun things lined up for it. Here are the highlights:

Saturday, May 25 at the Skamokawa Grange with Wanderlodge. Merry and I will team up with our friends, Austin & Emlen, to create a four-piece act we are calling The Slough Rats. We will be playing a few Mutineers songs, a few of their tracks, and a few select covers. Across the road from the Grange is Vista Park. It has a beach on the river and a bunch of camping and other facilities to rent. Come spend Memorial Day weekend with us. The show is $10 at the door.

Thursday, July 4, The 38th Annual Crawfish Boil $30 gets you all day hourly crawfish and shrimp boil, a food ticket to go through the buffet line, 5 drink tickets, and performances by 11 awesome bands from noon till 10pm! This is going to be an insanely good time. If you are near Portland, do this for Independence Day.
Saturday, July 13, at The Olympic, Boise, ID with Messimer and Rider Soran. Luke Messimer writes great songs. And he can sing the hell out of them. Messimer was one of our favorite acts of Treeforts past. Rider Soran, from Boise's Marshall Poole, has a new country band he is leading and we can't wait to hear what he's got going on. The Olympic is awesome. Can't wait for this show and our return to Boise. This is part of a longer tour through Idaho, Montana, and eastern Washington/Oregon.

Friday, August 30, Walnut City Fest, McMinnville, OR. They have already announced the lineup for this end of the summer music festival in wine country. Our friends, the very talented MAITA, are on the bill along with the mighty Yawpers. It's a two day festival in the park with after parties in the nearby bars. Get it on your calendars too.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/57232222019-04-17T13:34:16-07:002019-04-17T13:34:16-07:00NW Spring Dates/Straight Into The Sun Tour
California gave us a dose of Springtime that we severely needed after a typical PNW Winter. It was so gorgeous down south after all the rain. And, hey, the shows were pretty damn good too! We broke some new ground on this tour. New venues and towns. New songs. New friends. We are plotting our return already.

The Spring tour dates roll on up here in the great Northwest. Here's the updated tour poster. We have our screen printed limited edition version at our merch table. It has metallic silver ink. Looks faaarrrrr ooouuuut. Only about a dozen or so left of 50. We also have an epic tour shirt that pays homage to E.T. Check them out at the shows.

From the Dirge to the Dance just turned 8 years old the other day. I'm a whole mess of emotions about that. It was our last release with Michael and Terry still with us. We did record a single with a b-side and sent it to a few radio stations but it was never released publicly. Hard to believe it took 5 years to release anything else. Time just slips away, and those were some tumultuous years for us. I'm proud of that album, although I have a tough time listening to it. I'd love to have another shot at those songs, and it breaks my heart to hear us playing with Michael. Gotta be careful with painful nostalgia...

It's been a while, but the focus and creativity are back. We are rehearsing new material during this round of touring. With your support, we will get back into the studio this year and get a new batch of songs to you before too long.

How could I? And with such a nice start too. It all began with our traditional January wood-shedding. Last year we spent that month working on what would become our Threshold EP. This January there was no recording, but plenty of writing and rehearsing. We have another batch of new songs to try out this Spring. Plus, Merry and I began working on a new side project so we can have plenty of opportunity to hustle and make a life out of music. It's called, Burt & Myrtle, a cover act focused on some of the most romantic and heart- wrenching songs we know. Our first gig is tonight, playing a private Valentine's Day show in Cathlamet, WA. We will direct you to more info about Burt & Myrtle in the coming months.

Meanwhile, we set up a couple of weeks of shows in California, Nevada, and Oregon for March-April. We have decided to wait until Fall to cross the Rockies for another U.S. tour. West Coast tour dates will be posted soon. 2019 began with a mini tour starting on Feb. 1 in Vancouver, WA and then continued on to Salem and Astoria, OR, followed by dates in Seattle and Tacoma. Things got really messy up north during our trip, and we woke up after our gig in Tacoma to about 6 inches of snow. The forecast was bad and the roads were horrible, so we decided (with the support of the venue) to cancel our show in Olympia. It was going to be our first show in that city but it will have to wait. We rescheduled at The Pig Bar for May 11. Sorry to anyone who had that canceled show on their calendar, but it did seem like just about everyone wanted to stay home on that snowy, icy day.

I have to mention the support we received at Fort George in Astoria. It was Super Bowl Sunday with snow in the forecast. Everyone was bracing us for a very slow night, but instead we had a great turnout, with much thanks to all the folks who came back to see us after catching us last year at the same time. Your enthusiasm was intoxicating. And so was the beer. We raise our glasses to you Astoria and Fort George Brewery. Cheers!

It all begins with a show we are very excited about, St. Paddy's Day (eve) with Casey Neill and the Norway Rats at Alberta Street Pub in Portland, OR. Casey put out a fantastic album last year, Subterrene. 3/16 is sure to be a blast. Tickets are available now at: Tickets Here!

After that, we head south with stops in Medford, Reno, Mariposa, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Highland Park, Sacramento, and more to come. We return to the PNW in April and will be playing in the larger region through the Summer. Hope you all are having a cozy winter. See you soon.

We are closing out the year with a few more shows in the PNW. First Merry and I host our annual Holiday Spectacular here in Cathlamet with the help of our local musician friends. We will be performing classic and not so classic holiday and seasonal songs in a variety show format on Saturday 12/22 at River Mile 38 Brewing. Then on Saturday 12/29 we head into SW Portland, OR to join Paul Mauer and The Silence, and Castles at Buffalo Gap. And finally, we end the year with our good friends in Seaside, OR on NYE for a private party at Seaside Brewing Company. January will be a quiet one for us out in the clubs. We will be back at it in February with shows in Salem, Astoria, Vancouver, Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia. And of course, we have a great show to announce for St. Paddy's Day weekend. I mean, it's tradition at this point right? Keep an eye out for more announcements.

Here's the YEAR IN REVIEW:

In the early months of 2018 we began working on our new EP, Threshold, while cat-sitting for a friend in Portland. We recorded most of the album during a particularly cold January at B-Side Studio, the same studio where we had recorded our last release. Everything felt great working with engineer Raymond Richards again. Right around the same time came a late night message from an admittedly buzzed up Clovis IV. He had this crazy idea (perhaps wine-influenced) to drive up from California to our off-tour home in Cathlamet, WA and work on a music video for the band. To his credit, when he woke up the next day and realized what he had committed himself to, he stuck with it. In the damp and cold of February we slogged through the muddy farms in search of great scenery and production ideas for two videos. We worked our asses off for three days, getting enough material for "Drug For That" and leaving more work to be done for "Afterthought". Meanwhile, I was finishing up the booking for our ambitious 3 month Spring tour as Merry designed new promo and merch material. Before we knew it, we were back at Treefort Music Festival having an unadulterated blast. The tour was off and running. It was indeed ambitious. We played a lot of regions for the first time: the northern Cali coast, Texas, Nashville, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Iowa, Montana. By the end of over 12 weeks on the road, I admit, I was spent. I couldn't wrap my head around anymore time in a moving van. We had it in mind to spend the rest of the year in the Pacific NW, but I, of course, had already committed us to several dates on an Autumn tour. No rest for the weary, we immediately began to fill up the dates in September to head back east. At the same time, we went back into the studio to finish up our EP. As the songs one by one got their finishing touches, we began to feel more and more excited about the project. Clovis had completed the final cut of "Drug For That", so we teamed up with Shameless Promotion PR to create a plan to release the video, followed by full promotion of our EP. Fortunately for us, Merry had our artwork ready for the CD cover and all the promo material for the release and tour. It helps to have design "in-house"!! By the end of August, Clovis was back on the farm with us filming the video for "Afterthought". Another whirlwind 3 days of work, but this time in the dead of summer heat. Finally, with just a few days to spare before hitting the road again, I finished screen printing our album covers and mailed off the first promotional copies of the CDs to radio stations and other outlets on our tour schedule. Shauna, at Shameless, was getting great reviews for our singles and EP ahead of its official release on the second day of tour. We made some killer last minute changes to our tour van and then, once again, we were off on the road, our fourth national tour in two years.

Three weeks into our tour, with the EP getting lots of reviews and features in the US and abroad, we released the video for "Afterthought". As of writing this entry, "Afterthought" has been viewed over 12,000 times on Youtube in the two months since its release. We are a humble band and it's a delight to see that our music and art are getting seen and enjoyed around the globe. It's a dangerous thing to focus on social media numbers of any kind. They can be manipulated by all sorts of entities. They can give the illusion of success or failure. They don't tell the full story. But they tell A story. The story here, I think, is that we have a piece of art that people are enjoying and sharing. For a DIY act especially, you need fans to magnify your efforts. You need someone other than yourself and your circle of friends to say "This is good stuff!" Having a great video can do just that, grab people's attention who have never seen your name before. Clovis did a beautiful job creating mood and bringing this video to life. Shameless Promotion got in front of people who would love it. The ball is rolling and seems to have momentum. I think this EP has some legs on it. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us! You can help us reach even more people by adding our videos to your Youtube playlists, or our songs to your Spotify playlists. These two avenues seem to be the number one way people are finding out about music these days. We are fortunate that the listeners can now play a role in who gets noticed in this industry.

84 shows this year. My goal was 100. I fell short, but I don't feel bad about it. As a two person team, we can only do so much. Booking is a pain in the ass. There's always more that could have been done with more time and energy. In January, I'll let you know what we are excited about in the year to come. But as for 2018, we have never had a busier year as band. We have gotten better as musicians, we have learned a lot about the business, and we have produced art that we are extremely proud of. I'm hoping that this year finds us creating many many new songs as we continue to support Threshold. We want to be ready to record again soon! Cheers to you and yours this holiday season.

The Portland to Portland tour was a blast. Two months on the road supporting the release of our new EP, Threshold, and it's accompanying videos for Drug For That and Afterthought. There was some really great press for this material, coming from here in the States, Europe, the UK, and Mexico. Check out some of the reviews, premiers, and interviews on our BIO/Contact page. Special thanks to Clovis IV and Shameless Promotion PR for helping get our music in front of people across the globe! Currently, our limited edition screen printed Threshold CDs are only available at shows. Or if Spotify is your thing, our entire catalog is now available to stream to your hearts content.

Before I get to the tour wrap up, we have some shows coming up in the Northwest. We are very excited for our first performance at Wildwood Hotel in Willamina, OR on Friday, November 30th. We are joining Alex Salcido of The Harmed Brothers, I think this one is worth a road trip! You should book a room at the hotel and enjoy a cozy autumn night with us. Go HERE to check out the rooms at the hotel.

We are returning to Seaside Brewery for our yearly holiday season visit. Our chance to hang out with the coastal locals! Sunday, December 2 starting at 7:30p. It's going to be a grand reunion. Speaking of reunions, we will be back at Trap Door Brewing in Vancouver once again for the Ugly Sweater contest on December 15. Our third year in a row? It's all a blur of atrocious knitting... We haven't played in Vancouver in about a year, it will be good to be back in town. See you soon.

Back to the tour... We raced out of California once again as the fires were exploding and this time, in the wake of a tragic bar room shooting spree. It was hot in SoCal in November. Everything is parched and/or recently burned. The landscape looked drastically different from when we moved there in 2006. Mass shootings at music venues had not yet become a trend. What a difference 12 years makes.

But within our world of playing music in SB, Ventura, and LA, those 12 years have led to some happy progress. The Cinema Bar in Culver City was a really positive night for us, once again, with thanks to Jay Souza of Patrolled By Radar. Hoping we can build on that and continue to explore LA this summer. That was followed by one of the most fun shows Merry and I have played. Maverick Saloon was a bit of a risky bet for us. We hoped we could get folks to come out from across the county to help us fill up that big honky tonk, and despite the somewhat sketchy mountain drive from SB, you did not disappoint. I was coming off of a cold that had left me pretty lifeless since North Carolina. It was the first night I felt 100%. Earlier in the day we went to Seven Bar in Santa Barbara to check in with our roots. It's the bar that was founded by our fallen bandmate, Michael. There's a small shrine to him tucked above the bar where we pay our respects. It's also the place where Merry and I were married. Stopping in always gives us a boost of energy and confidence. It's exactly the same boost we would get from Mikey before a show. So once Matt Armor had gotten the crowd moving with his incredible set at the Mav, and our sound check gave us exactly what we needed, and we were fueled by our pilgrimage, it was the perfect formula for a rocking show. There were great dancers, people getting up on stage to rock out, lots of voices singing along, dead quiet when we played our ballads, and a lone "circle pit" enthusiast during Drug For That. An incredibly positive night for us. Thank you all.

We were still on cloud 9 the next morning, after being cared for by our friends at Lion Eye Farms, when we started out for our Ventura gig at MadeWest Brewing. Our set was graciously received by an audience that had clearly come out for beer more than music. It was a happy surprise for us to get that giant room's attention for our set. But the real bonus to the show, from our perspective, was hearing our friends, The Detroit Sportsmen's Congress, bust out a version of our rarely heard song, "Sayonara, Senorita". It's a waltzy, indie-folk song off of our EP Nihilisteria from 2009. The DSC is a fantastic band with a soulful groove behind their Americana rock. Their set was amazing. They took our quirky and halting indie folk song and passed it through The Pogues/Dylan filter, with a big assist from Ben Saunders' accordion, and smoothed our waltz into a great jam. Well done my friends. It really is an honor to have someone play our song. You can see a clip of it on our FB feed.

That weekend was a real high point of the tour, and it was perfectly placed towards the end of the schedule. A two month tour has its peaks and valleys. Here are some other peak moments:

Charlotte, NC at The Evening Muse: We've played many shows with Drunken Prayer in our history, but this one was clearly one of the best performances by Morgan Geer we have seen. Solo, with his new Gretch Country Gentleman through my Fender Deluxe, the guitar tone was juicy and rich. But it was the vocals that really put the show over the top. Morgan played a bunch of tracks from his forthcoming album along with the best of his catalog. A beautiful room, it was an honor to play there.

Washington, D.C. at The Pie Shop: What a great new venue. Some of the best staff we have run across. Top shelf equipment. And The Highballers! Those guys rocked our worlds. They release their new album next week. If you are in DC go support The Pie Shop. We need venues like that in this world. And go see The Highballers so they can honky tonk the shit out of you.

Jersey: What can we say? You folks come through time and time again, and you bring new friends with you. It's a huge pleasure to return. Special thanks to Rob Miceli for the hospitality. And to Gerry's Place for making us feel at home. Our second gig in NJ, in Jersey City at Pet Shop, was the surprise show of the tour. On a Tuesday night, with bands we hadn't met before, in the basement of a club we have never played, in a city where we have never played, we had a great show. I won't forget the odd moment while we were loading out. People had been really responsive to our set and saying positive things to us afterwards. A member of the following band stopped me to say he enjoyed the set and "Don't give up! Don't quit!" It was oddly unsettling and comforting at the same time. It was a refrain we heard throughout the tour, all across the country. People know that the odds are against anyone trying to make a living playing original music. They understand that the world is always hinting at you to move on to something safer and more secure. They see the grind of loading and unloading for our 40 minutes under the lights (if there are lights). They know there isn't much money in it. They guess, correctly, that we often have no idea where we will sleep that night. But they want us to be out there doing the thing night after night. I think it gives folks some kind of happiness to imagine a band on the road, living a free life. It's nice to know that they recognize the struggle and offer their support. Those are almost always the same folks who shop at the merch booth btw ;)

Becket, MA at Dream Away: It was our third stay at Dream Away. You've probably read me gushing over it in previous tour posts. This time was no different. After much experimentation with the electric guitar in small rooms, we finally tuned up our sound to work with an all acoustic guitar show. Most of what we changed was on the sound engineering end, but we also approached our more rocking tracks with a different style that leaned more toward Velvet Underground than X on our heavier material. We also put most of the emphasis on the vocals over the guitar and drums. The audience response was great and we felt like we had hit on something really good. I predict an acoustic album in our future.

I won't linger on the low points. They can be fun to laugh about in retrospect, but most of mine involve sweating profusely in the van in 36 degrees or being in a fever haze while on stage. That didn't last for more than a few shows tho. Kansas needs to learn how to Autumn. I mean really? 95 degrees in late September? sheesh. I feel lousy we didn't play in the midwest on the way back to the west coast. I would have liked to try Nashville again as well. Oh well, we will get em next time.

We will be playing in the PNW through the rest of autumn and the winter. Spring plans are already in the works. Hope y'all are doing well out there. Thank you to all the new email list members! Thanks for all the support.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/54615522018-10-09T09:42:40-07:002018-10-09T09:42:40-07:00"Afterthought" Video Premier / Halfway Point of the Tour
We are very excited to share our latest video collaboration with Clovis IV. Our video for our second single "Afterthought" premiered last Friday on Rebel Noise.
Our most important relationships are the ones we are most likely to take for granted. Friends, lovers, and family grow weary of each other’s weaknesses and shortcomings over the years. We forget the struggles and victories of the past. Our long term relationships can become emotional traps or they can help us evolve. Afterthought is a warning to those of us who have not recognized the challenge in our midst.

HALFWAY POINT ACHIEVED

We are 16 shows deep into our Portland to Portland Tour. Big thanks and hugs to some key players so far: Raymond Richards for coming out to Boise to play bass!! All my cousins in Utah who always show so much love! Raymond Greico for saving the night in Denver! Mark at Extension Cord for making Milwaukee feel like home! John Salvage for doing everything for us Detroit! The whole damn Five O'clock Lounge family! Brian Verga for saving the night in Pittsburgh! Christian Marie for the same in Portland! And especially Rob Miceli for giving us safe haven in NJ for this long stretch.

We've continued to meet outstanding bar owners and patrons on this tour. We have hit about half new venues and half are return trips. And because you are so supportive and encouraging we just keep doing this thing. If you want us to stop, you are going to have to stop treating us like family!

We hit the "other" Portland last weekend (our first trip to Maine). New England was gorgeous this time of year, as you might guess. Up in the mountains the leaves were on fire with brilliant autumn color. We got to spend one night camping in Green Mountain National Forest. That was a treat. And we wrapped up that part of the tour at Dream Away Lodge in Becket, MA. It was our third time performing there and it has been a highlight of each tour. At the Dream Away and the night before in Portland, we played without the electric guitar and went fully acoustic. It was surprisingly satisfying. We love rocking out and think that is part of our band persona, but there was something that just seemed right about those sets. Maybe it's the space it gave us to focus on the vocals above all else. Maybe it's a bit of Michael's spirit coming through his acoustic guitar. Whatever it was, it made us consider playing in that arrangement more often. We would love to get a live recording and offer The Mutineers Unplugged.

We head south next week. For most of this tour we have been playing alone, and have only played with other bands at a few shows. On this stretch we get to team up with some really great acts. Friday 10/19 seems like a potential candidate for best show of the tour. We will be rocking the new venue above the Dangerously Delicious Pie Shop on H Street in Washington, DC. We will be opening the night for two great acts: Wonky Tonk and The Highballers. There's so much quality right there, I can barely stand it. A couple nights later, we have another solid bill with Richmond's own The Atkinsons at Cary St Cafe.

We follow up that week with three dates in North Carolina. We will be performing as the backing band for Drunken Prayer in what we hope is a preview of some extensive touring together next spring. We will of course be doing double duty and performing our own sets as well. Our buddies The Turkey Buzzards are touring out of California as well and we will get two nights with them as well. Really fun times ahead.

We will be shooting directly across the country after NC for our west coast dates. But do not despair, we have plans to return in the Spring to hit all the spots we missed on this tour. The west coast lineup is intense and I think it deserves its own blog post. So check back in a couple weeks for the next update. As always, please help us spread the word about upcoming shows.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/54066312018-08-29T14:05:42-07:002018-08-29T15:20:38-07:00"Couldn't Get Over You" Premiere On Big Takeover
Bigtakeover.com has the exclusive premiere of our newest single, "Couldn't Get Over You", off of the forthcoming, Threshold EP. Streaming now with a delightful review by writer, Jen Dan.

It's really exciting to get press for our songs, but even more so when the author is able to see into your heart's deepest desires. We can not think of a higher compliment than to suggest that we would be invited to play the stage at The Roadhouse from Twin Peaks: The Return. Thank you Big Takeover!

"One foot firmly in the Americana camp and one in old time rock n’ roll. A familiar warm feeling comes as with many Elvis Presley songs and some of the more mellow output by The White Stripes, though this track could easily fit in the final club scene that ended David Lynch’s recent season of ‘Twin Peaks’. Excellent, harmonious, sincere and catchy – a winning formula." – Big Takeover Magazine on The Mutineers' latest single, "Couldn't Get Over You"

This first release features Merry on lead vocals with Brian adding harmonies on the chorus. It signals some of the changes in our creative direction that began on Live at B-Side. We are going to continue to grow and change and hope you will stick around for the ride! Threshold will be released 9/14.
Our video for "Drug For That" directed by Clovis IV has been getting hundreds of new views! Thanks for your shares and your support. This past weekend we wrapped up shooting for another video single with Clovis. This one will be dripping in it's own peculiar, slightly creepy mood. Can't wait to share it with you all. In the meantime, keep an eye on our tour schedule. We will be all over the country this Fall.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/53857682018-08-13T14:10:40-07:002018-08-29T15:12:36-07:00THRESHOLD EP RELEASE AND THE PORTLAND TO PORTLAND TOUR
We finished our EP, THRESHOLD, and we will soon be ready to release it to the world. On September 14th, we will have our CD Release Show at tHe FuNkY tAco in Boise, ID. It will also be available across online platforms after that date. We have 5 songs for you to chew on. They mark a bit of a shift in our style. We produced all of the tracks with Raymond Richards, who also engineered Live at B-side, and together we added all the instrumentation we thought the songs deserved. We will still be touring as a duo, but it was a pleasure to flush out these songs as bigger arrangements. Raymond played bass throughout the EP and added sweet pedal steel, some percussion, and extra electric guitar on various songs. You'll get a bigger dose of Merry's vocals on this recording, and you will hear me playing the Hammond here and there. We used our departed brother Michael's acoustic guitar as well. I don't think you can play that instrument without sounding like him. It's sort of a conduit for his voice on this EP. Very happy to have that voice coming through in the mix.

PORTLAND TO PORTLAND TOUR - Fall '18

We begin our fall tour in support of our new EP this weekend in Portland, Oregon at Kelly's Olympian with Drunken Prayer and Hearts of Oak. Seven weeks later, after 15 dates as we cross the country, we will be in Portland, Maine, in the peak of the fall foliage. We absolutely booked our tour to be in that neck of the woods at that specific time. It's going to be lovely. After some time in the Northeast, we will head south to some familiar spots for us in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. The final leg of the tour starts in Las Vegas on 11/1, heads down into Los Angeles, and slowly makes its way north through Cali and back into Oregon. I've put up the first 17 or so dates of the tour and I'll be adding more throughout this week. We really hope to see you out there, so mark your calendars, tell a friend, and grab a copy of the new EP! As always we will have a limited amount of our self-printed, handmade CDs available directly from us. You can also pre-order the digital EP from bandcamp. "Drug For That" directed by Clovis IV
"Drug For That" has a video! We worked with our long time friend and collaborator Clovis IV to produce this video in the area surrounding our home in Southeast Washington. It's a place where decay and growth are intermingled. The beautiful buildings, that must have once held so much promise, are left to rot away. They are the shadows of someone else's dream. We thought it made for a striking backdrop to this video.

This song is for those who haven't bought into the idea of American Exceptionalism, and to those of you who would like to get back to the basics of life.

Check it out and share with friends.

Spring is giving way to summer. The farm is looking beautiful. We are settling in to the loft featured in this photo for a few months. There will be farm work, and there will be writing and rehearsing for the new album, and there will be booking of our fall tour.

We will also have a handful of shows in the region. We will headline the stage 7/21 for Bald Eagle Days here in Cathlamet, WA, joined by Tom Armstrong, and The Dead Hollows among other featured guests from the community. Down in Portland, on July 1st we will play a songwriter showcase at Alberta St. Pub, that will be acoustic guitar and sans drums. The full rock setup will be on display in Portland on 7/26 with the mighty Rootjack. More details on that will be added soon. And this weekend we will officially finish off our Spring Tour dates up in Northern Washington with three shows.

And now for your brief tour highlights (see our previous blog for Treefort wrap up):

There was decidedly less roadkill on this trip than on previous tours, but I do believe I saw a chicken who failed to make it to the other side of the road. In northern California we communed with new friends inside of an enormous redwood stump that had been burned and hollowed out by a lightning strike. After our performance, Lagunitas Brewery sent us on our way with 54 beers. It was one hell of an Easter basket. Listen to the music of The Creston Line, Loose Engines, and RJ Bloke, three California bands that we would always, always be happy to play with. Something about that show at The Cinema Bar got us feeling like a million bucks. Maybe it was having Jeffrey Marroquin write our set lists for us! Or maybe its the afterglow of being with our SB family! <3

We traveled into space once again with The Scoundrels in Las Vegas. Smokin' Sundays... A haze of blue memories. Tell Alexa to play their latest album for you. Mike lent me his green custom Gibson SG so that I could have an actual back up guitar on tour. It came in handy three times. Thank you Mike!!! She's coming back to you in the fall! Hopefully after we return for a fourth time to Albuquerque because Marble Brewery is always a pleasure. I can't shake the image of that talking unicorn tho.

Texas was ok. Jenny introduced us to kind folks who live in a hexagonal tree house. There seemed to be a group shower room there. We found that we shared a recording engineer (Raymond Richards) with the band (Will Courtney) we played with in Austin. Jacob Furr helped us achieve emotional balance after playing for two hours to several hamburgers in Fort Worth. And it all took place during an early spring heat wave. Hello 95 degrees in April! But the weather broke and we found ourselves in Hot Springs, Arkansas discovering that it existed. It was 40 degrees that night. We didn't leave the woods again until it was time to play Nashville with Matt Woods. Out of the woods and into the arms of the handsomest sasquatch.

Asheville, Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Staunton. We played with, and sometimes in Drunken Prayer. We ate fried chicken as often as we could. We listened to a 5-record live anthology of Bruce Springsteen one night. But mostly we listened to John Wayne, Texas Funeral. Morgan cooked marshmallows over the bbq. 5 year old Leon sang "We're Not Gonna Take It" at 1 a.m. Once again, I made baked rigatoni (no surprises here). I regret nothing.

In Lexington, KY we picked up a show by walking into a bar and asking. Everyone was nice. We did our third run through Cinci and Cleveland. The Perfect Children got yet another powerhouse singer in the band. They now have the sonic power to shatter entire city blocks of windows. And to The 5 O'clock Lounge I say, Be warned! If you keep treating us so kindly, we are going to keep returning. Our first show in Detroit was on Mothers Day. No one brought mom except John Salvage who they call The Hamtramck Springsteen. Deservedly so. Santa Cruz Batman was there, he knows. He gave us a healthy bit of advice. Keep it weird, he said. Huge respect to the great show put on by Connor Dodson and Quick Draw even though none of their mothers showed up, I don't think.

Up and over the U.P. All the trees lost their leaves again. The great lakes are as blue as the Caribbean, but they are cold. It was only the beginning of spring there and Matt Sayles took us to the family cabin to see where he'll post up when the shit goes down. When we got to Milwaukee, it was almost winter again. I bought a book about a volcano. Our friends at Extension Cord gave us a lovely introduction to a town we had never experienced before. Also, you simply can not top their care package. Wild Turkey 101 and beef jerky!!!! Also, there are more bars in Milwaukee than traffic lights, maybe. Minneapolis was the most diverse group of people you are likely to see in a bar. We were on turf known as Somali-land. It felt like nowhere else in the U.S. We had a blast!

We got an interview on KRFC before our show in Fort Collins. We played with DW Doucet and will do so again in the fall. And the camping got real good. The rivers were running fast. The trees were giving shade. The mountain air was cool. We tried to go to Arches National Park on Memorial Day weekend. Don't do that. But we saw Canyonlands anyway before heading to our Provo show with John Ross Boyce. After meeting a cat named Sharpie and communing with family, we headed into the last week of the tour. We had to kill four days in the mountains surrounding Bozeman, MT. I think Montana in the late spring is about as close to heaven as you're likely to find. We drove home after our gig and listened to 10 hours of podcasts about Twin Peaks: The Return.

Seriously, it's kinda crazy. I seem to remember a time when camping was a spur of the moment activity. All good tho. We get by with a little help from our friends. We have 9 shows over the next 11 days in this giant state. We are returning to some familiar stomping grounds in Sacramento, Forest Knolls, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Culver CIty. We are making our first stops in Crescent City (tonight!), Blue Lake, and Petaluma. Check the schedule for more details.

The great RJ Bloke (Patrolled By Radar) will be joining us for three shows on this tour: The Siren, The Brewhouse, and The Cinema Bar. He's one of our favorite troubadours. Our Twang n Bang buddies, The Creston Line, will headline the show at The Siren and then open for us as a two piece in Santa Barbara. And in Sacramento we will be joining Loose Engines and Diva Kings at Fox and Goose Public House. Outside of that, you'll find us holding down 2-3 sets all by our lonesome.

This leg finishes up in good ol' Las Vegas back with our super friends, The Scoundrels, for a very special birthday show for Bianca Scoundrel at the inimitable, The Dive Bar. I'm getting antsy just thinking about all these gigs. Let's go already!

We had an absolutely fantastic time at Treefort Music Fest this year. Last year we both had a terrible cold that sidelined us outside of our own gigs. It was a bummer. This year we used every bit of time and energy to see tons of great bands. The whole festival was unbelievably well planned, executed, and attended. There was way too much for any one person to do. Here's a quick list of the bands we saw. Dial them up on your music app of choice and find something to fall in love with:

Big White (Australia), Luke Messimer, And And And, MAITA, Galactic, Marshall Poole, Dan Dan, Sun Valley Gun Club, Taylor Kingman, BAND DIALOGUE, Serpentfoot, Dante Elephante, Battlehooch, Orchestra Pacifico Tropicale, Cindy Wilson, Bart Budwig, The Weary Times, and probably a bunch more... there was so much we didn't see too.

Big thanks to our buddy Connor in Boise for hosting us when we needed some kind hospitality and down time!

More dates are about to be announced for the return trip from the east side of the Mississippi. Stay tuned!
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/51152872018-03-06T22:15:50-08:002018-07-19T02:04:21-07:00St. Patrick's Day with GIANTS IN THE TREES in Portland

We have entered the Oregon phase of our Spring tour. Ok it's not spring quite yet, but things are looking up here on the Columbia River. It was actually over 50 degrees and sunny today! And so we begin our journey. We've listed dates all the way up to Albuquerque, NM, with many more to come all across the country. Keep an eye out for us in your town! It all starts this Sunday in Astoria, OR at the mighty Fort George Brewery. This place is enormous and boasts some amazing views of mouth of the river. It is an awesome spot for live music. The show is free and all ages!
Hey Portland! What are you doing on St. Patrick's Day? We have a kick-ass lineup for you at Dante's. The Mutineers will be joining troubadours Mishka Shubaly and Michael Dean Damron in support of the buzz worthy Giants in the Trees. They put on a stellar show and have been getting rave reviews by the press, both locally and nationally. They also happen to be our friends and neighbors while we are in Wahkiakum County, WA. Come see what the fuss is about. I promise we will leave it all on the stage for you Portland. We won't be back until the Summer, so we want to leave you with fond memories. Poster by Mutiny Studios.
On our way out to Treefort Music Fest, we will be making a stop in La Grande, OR for a Tuesday night performance at HQ, a new venue space right downtown. It's also the headquarters of the Eastern Oregon Film Festival. Hope to see some of the same crazies we rocked out with last time through town. You all were a blast. We will be playing with locals, Catskills: https://www.facebook.com/events/214965349244024/

If you are thinking of coming out to Boise to see us at Treefort, you should!! You should also get your tickets or passes now so you don't get left out in the cold. There are tons of great reasons to go to Treefort. It's not just music, but there are somewhere around 500 bands performing. There's Foodfort and Yogafort and Hackfort and Filmfort and on and on. It's insane how much there is to do. We hope to see you there, bouncing around between shows and making memories. There's three opportunities in February to see us play in Northern Washington. We have some great local bands on the bills with us in some very cool venues (Including Michael Ray and the Plastic Sheets, Ask Sophie, and Sharky Waters). Help us get our heads ready for our big spring tour by spreading the word to your friends in the area. We will give you a taste of some of our newest tracks. Speaking of which...

We just finished our short stint in the recording studio. We returned to B-Side Studios here in Portland to work with The Gentle Shepherd, Raymond Richards once again. This time we are taking a different approach from the live recording we put down for our last album. With help on multiple instruments from Raymond, we are fully producing our latest songs with whatever instruments and voices we feel inspired by. Expect to hear a Hammond Organ, random percussion, bass guitar, and our departed brother Michael's beautiful Gibson acoustic guitar. We recorded 4 songs and we are really happy with the results. During our Spring tour we will be wood-shedding new material and getting it ready to record in the Summer. If all goes well, we should have an album to share this coming Autumn. You can help support our new album by downloading Live at B-Side. You can pay what you want ($5 min) for our digital album when you buy it from our website. Don't forget all of our merch is designed by Merry and screen printed by Brian. Picking up a t-shirt, poster, or CD will help us a ton! And thank you in advance ;)

Larry and His Flask were on fire, sparked by Ian Cook's shredding electric guitar work. Damn did that guitar sound good. The crowd was dancing throughout the set. Everyone had a blast. And they came early! There were a ton of folks there for our opening set and it grew for Bridge City Sinners after us. We feel very fortunate to have closed out this year with a few shows at Dante's. They gave us the opportunity to play for a lot of new faces. And to play with our touring buddies that we haven't seen in years!

That last gig put our show tally at 85 for 2017. It was a our busiest and most ambitious year to date. Merry and I are happy. Things have gone well. We want to make it to 120 shows in 2018. That means lots of time on the road. You can watch for our Spring tour schedule soon. It will bring us all across the country. If you want us to come to your town, we would love to hear from you!

We will be back in Portland for a very special show on St. Patrick's Day 3/17. More on that soon! The Sunday before that, 3/11, we return to Fort George Brewery in Astoria. The last time through was outstanding. We are happy to be heading back. We will be up in Seattle and Tacoma on 2/16-17. Our first ever show in that area. Spread the word if you can. Meanwhile, we are hunkered down in SE Portland, writing and rehearsing new songs for our upcoming recording session. There's a lot of stuff to say, and we are figuring out how to say it. With any luck we will have a single to share with you in the near future.

Merry is beginning to edit videos for us! One more skill in her vast quiver of talents. She made this video for "Break Your Fall"

We hope you dig it. It was made from a collection of short iPhone videos. Some live footage from our tours and also shots of the farming community where we spent a majority of the year. I think she made a rad thing. We will be putting out more videos for the songs on Live at B-Side over this year.

We ventured on a rough oval-shaped route through the country barely missing some of the key events of this year. We left the Northwest just as it was catching on fire in early August. We were in the path of totality, but left the area the week before the eclispe. We spent the night in Charlottesville, ten days after the Nazi rally. As we drove west, Hurricane Harvey swirled a couple hundred miles to the south. When we made it to Los Angeles, we rubbernecked our way down the 210 highway, gawking at the massive La Tuna wildfire burning in the foreground. The following night we played at Seven Bar in Santa Barbara and the next day, a water spout came in from the ocean and blasted their street, breaking trees in half. When we returned to Oregon, the gorge was on fire. Our van was our view point for a lot of these experiences. Vanna is a helluva partner. It's been an intense year and we were fortunate to experience it out on the road.

Here was our path:

WA - OR - ID - UT - WY - CO - KS - MO - IL - IN - KY - OH - PA - NY - MA - NJ - DE - MD - DC - VA - WV - NC - TN - AR - OK - TX - NM - AZ - CA - OR - WA

We performed 21 times and participated in 1 wedding. We put about 10k miles on the odometer. We took one rock to the windshield. There were no flat tires but our brake rotors needed to be replaced (luckily we were back in the same town where we originally got them!) We camped often, sometimes surprisingly close to major cities. We saw new species of roadkill: wild boar and porcupine. There were no major injuries or illnesses to report.

It was a great time. A pleasure to see so many faces we knew. We made it a point to stop in our favorite cities and venues from the Spring tour. Merry and I deeply appreciate the opportunities we've had this year. The venues have been great partners and the local people we have met have been open, kind, and fun as hell. I spent a fair amount of time gushing on this subject while we were on the road. We are back home in Cathlamet, WA now, enjoying the approach of Autumn. We will be hunkered down in this region until early spring. For the rest of the country, we will see you soon. In the meantime, we will be performing in the Northwest and getting creative here on the farm. Time for new songs, for new times.

We are starting our second U.S. tour of 2017 on Thursday, August 3 at Tom Grainey's in Boise, ID. It's gonna be a hot one out there. Tomorrow in Portland, OR we are looking at over 105 degrees. Damn. But here we go, regardless. We will be covering some of the same ground we did in the Spring and some new territory as well. Glad to be making our first stops in Provo, UT and Fort Collins, CO, and Chapel Hill, NC. And we hope to see some familiar faces in the towns we are returning to.

Merry has created a new design for a t-shirt and screen printed poster that we are adding to our merch booth. It was inspired by the rural community we have been living in since our return to the Pacific Northwest in May. It has been a rejuvenating experience with plenty of hard work, beautiful scenery, wildlife, and healthy eating. The barn in the picture sits next door to our farm, abandoned and held captive by the bank which repossessed it. The barn owl in the center of the image was living with his family inside the barn until a great horned owl (also in the picture) came through and devoured them. Farm life is beautiful and harsh. Grab one at a show, or if you miss us, we will put them in our online store when we return in mid September.

It's been a really nice stay in the Northwest. Special shout to Vancouver, WA and the support we have received in that community. We also have to say that Wildwood Music Festival is the best! It was the perfect size, great production, wonderful stage and sound team, beautiful grounds, and lovely people everywhere. You should keep that on your radar friends. It is awesome! Thanks to everyone who keeps us moving forward. Love you guys!
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/47124912017-05-17T12:14:33-07:002018-03-28T12:57:00-07:00May thru July in the PNW!
We have returned from our tour around the US! We traveled through 27 states, playing shows in 24 of them in a crude figure 8 pattern that allowed us to experience all 4 seasons in just 2 months. It was amazing. Thank you to all the people who came out to see us play, housed us, fed us, booked us, and of course to all the bands who played with us. It was a most excellent experience. And we are looking forward to seeing you again in a few months when we trek back across the fruited plain for another US tour. We are booking ourselves back at some of our favorite stops from the first tour plus trying to hit a couple new markets. Dates will be announced in a few weeks!

If you saw us on tour and didn't take the opportunity to grab some merch, you can get it all right here on our website. Just visit our STORE. Remember, our latest album, Live at B-side, is not available through iTunes, but you can pay what you want (min. $5) for the digital download on our MUSIC page. We sold out of some items while on the road. Thank you! Merry will be designing a new shirt and poster to bring out on this next trip.

We will be in the Pacific Northwest thru the end of July, playing gigs, working on a farm, and writing new material, as well as printing and designing for Mutiny Studios. We are having a blast! The West Coast leg of our national tour is all wrapped up with last night's gig at The Dive Bar in Las Vegas. Thank you to Bianca Bananas and The Scoundrels for teaming up with us once again. It was an epic night. Las Vegas is weird as hell in the best possible way. I have to name drop the other great bands we've played with. Our all-stars: Nocona, Patrolled By Radar, Matt Armor, Wanderlodge/The Matters, Creston Line, Hayley and the Crushers, The Gillbillies, and 50-Watt Heavy.

Next up is Treefort Music Fest in Boise! Honored to be a part of this festival. Our showcase is at Pengilly's Saloon on Thursday night, but be sure to keep an eye out for the rest of the week as we might be playing some surprise spots as well ;)

One of the best things about touring is meeting the web of music lovers everywhere we go. Sharing the culture and language of music is a beautiful experience. And, practically speaking, you can't tour and live the life without a network of like-minded people as the foundation. We really appreciate the immense support of old friends, and the warmth of the new folks we've met along the way. We wrote Roadkill all those years ago to express that idea. Might be time for another road trip based song. If you can share our upcoming tour dates with friends in reach of our shows, it is a huge help to us.

East Coast leg of the tour picks up in Cincinnati on Tuesday, March 28 at The Listing Loon with The Perfect Children and Dead Man String Band, followed by a night at The Dream Away Lodge in Beckett, MA.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/45862982017-02-11T13:26:09-08:002017-02-11T13:27:31-08:00A Very Good Night in St. John's plus 2/22 with Amigo the Devil If you were one of the 100 or so people at The Fixin' To in St. John's this past Thursday, I think you just saw a little piece of history. Not just because Krist Novacelic, legendary bassist of Nirvana, was playing within arms reach of us mere mortals. Not just because Krist was hanging out in the venue with everyone all night. But because the band he played in, Giants in the Trees, gave a stirring performance in what was their first public show ever. The band is a songwriting partnership between lead singer, and buddy of ours, Jillian Raye and Krist. Jillian gave a dazzling performance and had the crowd mesmerized. We are really excited to see where this project goes. Krist is a funny dude, incredibly easy going and supportive. Cheers to the whole band.

Henceforth, let 2017 be known as "the year that we got the dude from Nirvana a gig in Portland". We are sure they would have been lost without us ;)

Keep your eyes peeled for more shows from Luke Messimer. We are the first opener followed by Adrian H and the Wounds. It's worth mentioning that the great Lucero will be playing the big room at the Theatre that night as well. Two weeks on the road and then back home. We did it many times while based in Santa Barbara, and once again after we moved up to Portland. But then it hit us. Why not keep going? It's just the two of us. We have a sweet van and we really enjoy the time on the road. Whenever we finish a tour, we are overwhelmed by the feeling that we were just getting warmed up, that we could have gone for two more weeks at least. But there were always countless reasons why we couldn't make it work. It takes a leap of faith to get to that next level in this business, a leap of faith and a whole bunch of connections and experience gained through years of grinding it out through the good times and bad. Now is the time we take that leap.

We have released dates for the first leg of our tour. We will be delighted to see our fam in California again, not to mention some of that good ol' sunshine. (It's been a brutal winter in the PNW). We have shows in Cali with some great bands: 50-Watt Heavy, Hayley and the Crushers, The Creston Line, Matt Armor, Patrolled By Radar, and Nocona. And we can not wait for our return to Vegas to reunite with our buds The Scoundrels. That would be enough to float my boat, but there is much more news to come.

On Feb 2nd we will release the second leg of our tour schedule, and we are very pleased to say that it will feature dates in MA, NY, NJ, and PA. After that we will be heading back to the west via the southern route with stops in NC, TN, CO, and AZ. More on that as it unfolds.

We'd love to see you out there. Below is the press release for the album that will give you some insight on the whole thing.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Portland husband-and-wife duo The Mutineers have just finished their latest self-released album titled Live at B-Side. It features 11 songs recorded live in two days at B-Side Studio in Portland, OR by Raymond Richards (Local Natives, HoneyHoney, The Parson Red Heads).

“We made an album without a single overdub, not even the vocals, so people can hear exactly what we sound like as a two-piece.” says guitarist and singer/songwriter Brian Mathusek who founded the band along with wife, drummer and singer Merry Young. The album is their first release since the loss of acoustic guitarist and third founding member Michael Astudillo in 2014. “It’s been difficult to pick up the pieces but we knew we had to keep making music and we wanted a recording that truly reflected our live sound now as a duo.”

Known for their cynical, often rebellious, but always honest songs, The Mutineers have not abandoned that spirit. But their latest work digs deeper, reflecting a more aggressive expression of frustration, anger and loss. The first track “Barbara,” starts the album off with a tear-stained farewell letter to their former city. “Break Your Fall” asks haunting questions about addiction. “Drug For That” is a blistering commentary on the over-medication of modern society. “I Will Fight No More” recounts the heartbreaking retreat of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe. “Sell Your Life,” a sardonic pseudo-love song, paints a picture of beautiful people living so-called perfect lives. Also included on the album are newly recorded versions of some old favorites that are no longer in print.

The album will be available on CD directly from the band and can be ordered from their website (www.themutineersmusic.com). Digitally, it will be available for purchase through limited outlets but not on the streaming services. The CD packaging for the album was made entirely by the musicians themselves. Young created the artwork and Mathusek screen printed each color by hand. Then they cut, glued, numbered and hand-assembled each one. They also screen print all of their own T-shirts and posters and offer their services to other bands as well. Their company Mutiny Studios (www.mutiny-studios.com) has designed and printed for many artists including Motörhead, Suicidal Tendencies, Quicksilver Messenger Service and a long list of local and national bands.

The Mutineers will be playing throughout the Pacific Northwest this winter with plans for a national tour starting in Spring of 2017.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/44374912016-10-25T20:44:29-07:002017-01-14T09:23:59-08:00THE MUTINEERS LIVE AT B-SIDELive at B-Side was recorded in two days at B-Side Studios in Portland, Oregon. It was pretty stormy outside while we recorded and the chestnut tree next door was bombing us with its spiky balls when it wasn't actually raining. But it was cozy inside and we got a lot of work done with the help of The Gentle Shepherd, Raymond Richards. He's gotten us through the mixing process. And he made it extremely comfortable to record 100% live, without the use of overdubs or layers of any kind. Merry and I have gone through many changes in the past few years, and we want to give our fans, new and old, a raw and real look at who we are today. I can't wait to share it with you all. Raymond captured some beautiful tones and, we think, some killer performances. Now it's on to mastering, reproducing and packaging. You can help us fund the last steps of the process by PRE-ORDERING your copy today. Merry is creating the artwork in the other room while I (Brian) type this blog out. We will post images of the design soon. PRE-ORDER and we will mail you your copy as soon as the ink is dry. We set up a combo option with our maroon crow shirts as well that you might dig. Take a look!

The album will have 11 songs, featuring 7 previously unreleased tracks and 4 tracks rerecorded from our back catalog. We recently ran out of our 3rd edition of Tidal Wave CDs. A happy occasion for us. For now that album will only be available as a digital download or wherever you stream music. Instead we thought it would be a good idea to re-record three of those tracks the way we play them today as a two-piece. We also included a new version of a song that was on our very first self-titled EP, which only a very few of you might have. The song You Don't Have To was originally written in 2006 in Park Ridge, NJ in a blue house near the train stop across from the diner. It will be the closing song on Live at B-Side. I'll be sharing more and more tidbits about the album as we move ahead, from the artwork, to the track listing, and pictures of the arts and crafts.

In the meantime, come see us at an upcoming show. In Portland, we will be at The Firkin Tavern on Friday, Nov. 4 with Matthew Lindley. It's always a huge boost to get out and play back to back, night after night. It really tightens the screws on the performance. So at the suggestion of our supportive friends down south, we got ourselves some studio time as soon as we returned to Portland to try and grab some of that magic we felt on tour. We recorded 11 songs, completely live and without overdubs. Merry and I both wanted a recording in our merch booth and in our store that sounds like our current live show. There's some minor mixing to be done yet and album art to create, but the album "Live at B-Side" will be available in just a few weeks. We hope you enjoy the sound of our naked selves, baring it all for you, just like we do on stage. A huge thank you to our Gentle Shepherd, Raymond Richards, for guiding us through this whirlwind recording.

And suddenly, it was Autumn again.

Here we are, the most bestest time of year in my estimation. You know the deal. Hot drinks, warm sweaters, dogs in jackets, cats in coats, and brilliant falling maple leaves. And because we made it our goal this year, we have the fourth and final edition of the seasonal posters. What's cozier in the Fall than a big ol' beard? Check out the world of joy that Merry believes thrives in the eco-sphere of my beard. It's the Autumn Poster and it will be available in our merch store and at our shows just as soon as I get around to printing it.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/43404392016-08-24T15:34:19-07:002017-01-14T09:23:59-08:00End of Summer Tour 2016 plus NEW DEMO STREAMING Hi folks. NYE was great. Hope yours was too. We are back in Portland now, booking ourselves a busy winter and spring schedule. We start out at The Firkin Tavern on Feb 4. If you haven't checked out music at The Firkin and you live in Portland, you're already missing out! It's a cool, quirky spot for bands. DIY kind of shows, good crowds, no frills. Love it.

We will be at The White Eagle on Feb 18 and March 17. Once again we find ourselves with a St. Paddy's Day show. This one wasn't planned to be a Paddy's Day show, but as always we will pull out some Clancy Brothers and Pogues tunes. We will be up in Washington and a whole bunch in rural and coastal Oregon before the sun returns to the Northwest. Lots of dates in the works. Looking forward to a busy schedule! We will be using this poster for our next couple months of shows. Lovely work by Merry. The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/39544432015-12-07T17:25:48-08:002018-03-28T12:55:11-07:00NYE Eve and also EveThe Mutineers have two shows on California's central coast to celebrate the New Year. Folks here are very kind and the music scene is lively and supportive. The talent in this town is outstanding. The only question is whether I have the stamina (or $$) to go out, because there's great live music going on nearly every single night. Cheers to the crowd that joined us last Wednesday evening at The Old Gilbert Road Tavern. It was our first "plugged-in" show since we arrived and it was a blast. If you missed that one, Portland, we will be adding lots of local shows after the new year, so we can all get acquainted.

A hearty cheers goes out to Morgan Geer of Drunken Prayer for the many outstanding sets he played during his week long whirlwind Portland tour. The Mutineers have moved! Our new fortress is in SE Portland, OR and its surrounded by 500+ bands. The talent in this town sets the bar really high for musicians. We have always felt motivated by "competition" among our peers in the sense that we feel driven to play at the level of those we admire. Portland is also the first city, outside our home base, to truly support our project. Since the very first Mutineers tour in 2007 we have been returning to play at least once a year and have always appreciated the great venues and engaged audiences. If you haven't caught our show yet, we look forward to meeting you. We will be posting shows for the Portland area soon, starting with a set in support of our buddy Morgan Geer of Drunken Prayer on 12/2 at the Old Gilbert Road Tavern.

If you've been following The Mutineers for a while, you know we've been through some tough changes. After going down to a 3-piece band in 2013, we suffered the tragic loss of our brother, band mate, and guitarist Michael Astudillo. It's been difficult to pick up the pieces. It is very hard to hear some of our songs without Michael's presence, not to mention the enormous vacancy left by his larger-than-life personality and boundless optimism. It helps us at some level to have the feeling of starting over in a new scene, to reinvent ourselves, to potentially find new band mates, and to find the energy to go forward. Merry and I (that's me, Brian) are performing as a duo and loving it. The songs will sound different, to be sure, but they haven't lost their soul. Our sound has become a bit more aggressive at times, and maybe that makes sense given our difficult past. We hope you will continue on the journey with us. We have a lot more to share! The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/38655952015-09-23T15:14:13-07:002015-09-23T15:14:13-07:00The Mutineers, Matt Armor, American Dirt on Oct 2Matt Armor is going to join us for a road trip to SLO county for a gig at Dunbar Brewing in Santa Margarita on Friday, October 2. Matt will do an opening set with Brian filling in on bass followed by The Mutineers as a duo and our great buds American Dirt. Probably our last gig up there before we relocate to Merry's old stomping grounds in Portland, Oregon at the end of the month. We'll continue to play as a duo up there and work on new songs and will surely come back down to Cali to play some shows in the future. Stay in touch!
Brian and MerryThe Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/37496802015-06-21T13:34:25-07:002018-03-28T12:54:07-07:00Girls Rock SB! Hey folks. You may have seen Merry and I playing shows lately with Ralph Lowi and/or Matt Sayles, using some name or other each time, but not The Mutineers. That's been a tough one for us without Michael. Out of respect for his absence and out of sheer sadness we have suspended the old band name. We continue to play and write new songs, but we also include plenty from our catalog of Mutes music. Playing at SLO Brew a few weeks back, I was struck by the empty spaces in the songs where Michael's guitar licks would be. I almost wanted to fill up those spaces with something, but I left it open. It was nice, I could almost hear the parts he would play.

As long as Merry and I are still playing together, I know the Mutineers live on and we can continue to commune with Michael through the songs. I'm not going to make any grand statements about our future. What comes will come. Whether we tour or not, whether we pump out more albums or not, our future is going to remain murky. But we wanted to throw whatever currency our band has behind a fund raiser for local music school GirlsRockSB! To that end The Mutineers will be the headlining act at Soho on Friday, July 24. Help us raise the money to support the musical empowerment of young ladies. We love to see girls and women represented on stage. The best way to do it is to let them know at a young age that this isn't a boys club. Rock and roll is for everyone. Hope you can come out and see us rock for GirlsRock. The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/32670942014-11-04T22:09:44-08:002017-01-14T09:23:59-08:00Farewell Mikey MutineerWe are devastated to tell you all that we lost our dear friend and founding member, Michael Astudillo, over this weekend. It is a terrible loss. Our musical lives together began long before The Mutineers came into being. It was always about spreading cheer to those around us. We used to call it "rallying". Walking up to strangers and playing whatever instruments were available in a frenzy until we overwhelmed them into dropping their guard, smiling and loving life. It's how I met Merry actually. We hope we rallied you at some point, but if WE didn't, I'm sure Michael did on his own if you shared some time together. That legacy should be remembered and continued by those who were touched by him. The phrase "life's too short to play it safe" was never a flippant refrain. We were seriously warning you and ourselves that our ride here is brief. Live like you fucking mean it. As Michael's Hell No verse says, "cherish each and every last breath." We are heartbroken and dismayed and we love you all for your support over the years. Rest in peace brother.

Memorial for Michael James Astudillo
The Santa Barbara Art Foundry
120 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara
Sunday, November 9th 12-3p

Please join us to honor and celebrate the life of our friend and family member, Michael Astudillo, who meant so much to so many. We have three shows coming up at the end of the month right here on the lovely central coast. We will be joined on all three nights by our brothers from other mothers, American Dirt and The Dead Volts. For the first time since the 2012 Summertime Jamboree, The Mutineers will return to the Creekside Bar. We've had stellar shows there and lately they've done really nice things with the performance space. Plus they've got a relatively new eatery next door called The Bourbon Room, which is a great start for your night.

Saturday night we will be at the Libertine Pub in Morro Bay. Back on the road again. Circling through the West and NW. We've done this route before, but it's been a minute. Take a look at the dates. OK so half the gigs are sort of private affairs. But, If you see one of those parties in your area and you would like to attend, just email us and we will talk to the owners about getting you in through the secret entrance. We know how to get shows at bars and pubs and other venues. This tour we wanted to be sure we spent time with friends and family at every chance we had. The best way to do that, we think, is around the grill at a BBQ! Also in the schedule is our first trip to the newly re-opened Dive Bar in Las Vegas, a return to The Secret Society Ballroom in PDX, and a last stop at the Elbo Room in SF.

Our tour van, Vanna White, is all tuned up. Killer new equipment has arrived to support the new keyboard. We are woodshedding and hoping to create some great memories with all you good folks. Come on out. We will have hand made screen prints of our tour poster, created by drummer Merry Young, available for purchase at the gigs and in our merch store.

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/28787042014-04-17T11:23:47-07:002014-04-17T11:23:47-07:00The Mutineers Reboot! After hunting for a new member to join The Mutineers as we embark on a new era, we have given up...

Haha! Not giving up on the band or the songs, just on the idea that we need to add another member. Finding a motivated and reliable person in the area is daunting, and we are asking for a pretty tough commitment out of an adult. So many people have children and wives and decent jobs. WTF?! But it's going to be ok. Everything works out in its own way.

When we moved into our latest practice space, it came with an upright piano that the previous band did not wish to move out. It is out of tune (in a very endearing way) and some of the keys and hammers are busted, but it has sat there asking to be played. So Brian began to play it, a lot. And when rehearsal was feeling unsatisfying without a bassist, we put a mic on it and started to re-imagine our catalog. And we began to fall for the piano, kind of like a young kid realizing a first crush. And we've pursued this idea with gusto.

We've geared up. Bought a sweet keyboard with weighted keys and a gnarly road case. And we've left the idea of adding a member behind, for now. The sound has morphed into something more honky-tonk, less bluegrassy, more like old rock n roll, less like pub rock. We are being heavily influenced by The Band and the soulful rock of the early 70's. It's sounding beefy, exciting, and invigorated. When we've told our friends about the instrumentation change, they worry. "A piano? Does that mean you will be covering Tori Amos songs? Are you going to sit down during your performance? Say it ain't so!" We get it. When rock bands let their singers play the piano, what usually happens is he/she sings a bunch of sappy ballads that leave behind the vibe and history of the band. (See: November Rain, or any of the half-assed ballads of the late 80's/early 90's) But this is not what we are doing. You will have to come out and catch a show to see what we mean and you will soon have the opportunity. We have scheduled a tour around the annual event RANCHFEST hosted by our friends in Finn Riggins up in Idaho. We have a couple dates to finalize before we post the schedule. The dates will be Wednesday May 21 thru Wednesday May 28 all in the western states. Sorry rest of America and the world. We will visit you soon.

After the tour, we will have our first show back in SB since last November. We look forward to reintroducing ourselves to you all. There will be new songs along with our revamped older catalog. We sincerely hope you enjoy what we've done with the place. Stay tuned for more details. Cheers from The Mutineers.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/23638972014-01-10T12:01:24-08:002014-01-10T12:01:24-08:00A salute to our bassist Terry Luna and The Mutes plans for 20142014 is going to be an exciting year for The Mutineers. After releasing our next album, we plan to return to the East Coast and the Northwest as well as play our first shows in the South. It’s going to be an intense schedule and unfortunately our bassist, Terry, won’t be able to make the journey with us. We know that the only way to grow our band is to get out on the road. We also know that we can’t do it with a “fill-in”. We need the cohesiveness and the continuity of a full band out on tour. And so The Mutineers will take on a new member or two to play bass and/or keys. This was a difficult decision to make and a painful separation. Since our first show together in 2009, Terry Luna has been a important addition to The Mutineers. He helped expand what the band could do sonically and where we could perform. We have played somewhere near 200 shows together, from California to the New York Island. So many great memories came out of those years. Cheers to you Terry! It has been a blast, we thank you for your hard work and dedication to this band, and we wish you the best.

“I awoke from a spell on a violent swell, thrashing about on The Count. We have a last minute show announcement. The Mutineers will be the first of three bands tomorrow night at SLO Brew in downtown San Luis Obispo. In the spring, we recorded two songs at Santa Barbara Sound Design with Dominic Camardella. We released the single, Vegas Lights, just before the summer. And now we are happy to share the B-side, If You'll Be Mine. This track shows a more progressive side of the band with dueling guitar leads and a southern rock swagger. The recording was a great experience and we are completely satisfied with the results. Once again we recorded almost entirely live. Just a few added, overdubbed guitar leads and of course the vocals were done separately. We love it and hope you do too. YES! You can also stream the new songs on this very page. The player is at the bottom of the screen and plays continuously on any of of the site's pages.

Thank you to all who made it out to shows this spring/summer. We had a hell of a good run. Some of the best shows of our career happened over the last few months. We regret that we had to cancel our last date at El Rey Cantina in Ventura. Completely our fault, we messed up our scheduling. But now it is time for some much needed woodshedding. Time to lock myself in a room with a pen and paper, or go off on a solitary journey into the woods, or seal myself into a recording studio, or build a log cabin out of hand hewn logs. Anything to wake up the muse and get to writing and building up our chops. We do look forward to playing this years Twang n Bang festival at Frog and Peach in SLO (check the calendar). There may be a show or two in the local scene in the fall (New Noise Festival in sb?), but not too many opportunites to catch us until we've completed a recording that we can all be proud of. Something that breaks new ground for the band, while still covering turf that helped us connect with you all in the first place. Something that will express the core of what it means to be a Mutineer. And then we will take these songs out and conquer the world. I can't say exactly how long this will take. We've made those promises before... And frankly, I don't care how long it takes. As long as we produce something honest, vital, and challenging. We will keep you updated along the way. Thank you for all the support!

Some of the best shows of our career have happened over the past few weeks. We can't thank you all enough for the support and opportunities. We were very active on Facebook while on the road, so you can still catch some of the highlights that we documented for all the world to see here. I'll give you the key moments right here tho:

- SLO Frog & Peach. Great to see so many folks we met at the Murder By Death show in May. Terry's new bass made its debut performance and sounded great. Merry was asked to slow dance after the show by a fresh faced 20 something. aawwwwww.
- SF Plough & Stars. Spent the day at our favorite SF bar, Zeitgeist! So many beers on tap. Then to Golden Gate Park where Merry filled Brian's beard with wild flowers and we sang a capela in the public restroom only to find a crowd of people standing at the door listening when we emerged. After a fun show at Plough & Stars, we convinced our friend Megan to throw caution to the wind and jump in the van for the rest of the tour. Haha! Later that night, while driving along route 37, we veered off the road and into the bay, where we all drowned and went to band heaven. At least that was the only reasoning we could find for having such great luck on the road. That night, for reasons not entirely clear, the Marriot gave us two rooms for $67. Score!
- Cottage Grove, OR Axe & Fiddle. Band heaven continued with a relaxing double set just outside Eugene. We played a lot of songs that are rarely heard and got a sweet response from the locals. Thank you to our road angel Jessica for putting us up in your lovely home and feeding us spinach and broccoli quiche in the morning.
- PDX Secret Society Ballroom. The sun was raging in Portland for us. Merry's family came out to see us perform for the first time ever. Mike jumped into the crowd to rock out with Mom during Ace. We were all delighted to reunite with our buddy Morgan and his stellar band Drunken Prayer. We all danced the night away and met some real friendly folks. Followed by an epic party hosted by John and Carrie. Cheers guys. Thanks for having us. It was a blast
- Congratz to Morgan and Christa on their wedding that we were honored to attend on Sunday at the Deer Lodge. Couldn't have picked a better way to end the trip. Lots of new faces, but all felt like family.

We will return to SLO and SF, at least, in the fall. In the meantime, we will be at Cold Spring Tavern on 6/29, Firestone Winery on 7/12, and El Rey Cantina in Ventura on 7/20. Then its time for Merry and Brian to get married. And for the band, its time to finish writing and recording the next album. So we will disappear for a while. When we return it will be with a vengeance. Ready to conquer the world.
The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/8319822013-05-28T06:20:31-07:002017-01-14T09:23:58-08:00The Return of Steve, MBD, T&B Comp, and the Tour BeginsOur tour schedule has begun. Friday night's fund raiser for Steve Laffie at Velvet Jones was a big success. Thanks SB for coming out in force to support a good guy and rock out with us. Was great to see Steve back on stage with Big Jugs, and with a killer new song.

Memorial Day was a bit of a mile marker for us. We took the stage at SLO Brewing in support of Murder By Death. Opening for a band we love and at a top notch venue. Big smiles on all of us. To our SB friends we say, GO SEE MBD AT SOHO THIS THURSDAY! We were extremely bummed not be able to open for that date but these guys are killer. Cheers to Adam, Sarah, Dagan, Matt, Scott, and James Dean. Felt a lot of love from the SLO crowd. Very satisfying since we've had our hearts set on winning over that town. We owe a good deal of that to our buddies at Twang n Bang Records who have seen fit to book us on great shows and include us on their latest compilation. Big thank you to Pat, Jon, Hailey, and all the rest of you who keep the SLO scene vital. We will be back at Frog and Peach on Wednesday, June 12. For more info on the Twang n Band compilation follow this link: LINK!

Next up for us, Thursday at The Tavern in Ventura. Our very own Terry Luna will be opening the show with members of his other project Holdfast Rifle Company. It's free to enter and a cool place to chill. Then this Saturday we join an onslaught of SB's finest bands at The Creekside for a marathon of music. Hosted by Eating Fear! We've been trying to figure out how to book our two, very different, bands on the same bill. So here it is.

And don't forget that we have Vegas Lights streaming on our site-wide music player. Have a listen while you visit. Cheers!

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/7396602013-05-14T03:45:00-07:002017-01-14T09:23:58-08:00New Single, "Vegas Lights," Released! Stream now on our site-wide playerOur audio player at the bottom of the page is now streaming The Mutineers' latest single, Vegas Lights. Featuring the voice of drummer, Merry Young, the song pays homage to the classic sassy duet of the golden era of Nashville. Recorded at Santa Barbara Sound Design. We are really pleased with how well this recording met our vision. Hope you enjoy! For now this song will only be available to stream on our sites: Facebook, Reverbnation, and right here. We will be cutting a seven-inch with a soon-to-be-released B-side and making them available as part of an upcoming Kickstarter campaign to fund a full album. We hope this will inspire folks to participate so that we can get the same high-quality recording for the entire album. More to come on that over the next month, stay tuned.

In the meantime, tickets are still available for Murder By Death with The Mutineers at SLO Brew HERE. Memorial Day done the Mutes' way. We have our tour poster up and all of the dates filled in for the time being. Can't wait to hit the road.

Next up, its the Benefit for Steve Laffie. Our friend who's alter ego plays in Big Jugs underwent successful heart and kidney transplant
surgery. He is now recovering brilliantly and we are trying to lend a hand to help him handle the massive health care expenses he incured. Come out and have a blast with great bands for a good cause. Lots of insane raffle prizes available.

The Mutineerstag:themutineersmusic.com,2005:Post/6328852013-04-29T06:15:00-07:002017-01-14T09:23:58-08:00Murder By Death and a very busy JuneWe are absolutely stoked to announce that we are opening for Murder By Death at SLO Brew Co. in San Luis Obispo, CA. We've been following this band's career for years now and have always admired their work. Now we get to open up the show for them at a real swell venue. Thanks to Numbskull for getting us on the bill.

June is going to be a really busy month for us. We will be promoting a kickstarter campaign to help us record a full length album. We have two songs recorded to give away to all who donate (plus a bunch of other rad gifts) so you can see what direction the band is headed. We have gigs booked in Ventura, Santa Ynez, SLO, SF, and a couple up in Oregon, as well as a few right here in Santa Barbara. Looking forward to a lovely summer and a new album in the fall. We hope you all arrived home safely with your whiskey stains and green teeth. See you all at Whiskeyfest III in 2014... Next up, Saturday, April 13, 9:00 p.m., we play our first show at Mike Mutineer's new bar in the funk zone, Seven Bar & Kitchen! And we're bringing our friends from SLO, American Dirt and The Dead Volts. Let's get the place off to a good start, shall we? Come by and celebrate with us and check out the new spot. 224 Helena Ave., Santa Barbara.

Lots of good things coming up this spring and summer, including some new venues we've never played before. Check our updated schedule for dates.
